Eight Empire 8 Student-Athletes Earn 2021 IWLCA All-Region Team Accolades

Eight players from three Empire 8 institutions were named to the 2021 Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) All-Empire Region Team. Four players earned first team honors, while four were named to the second team. Nazareth led all E8 members with four selections, while Empire 8 Champion St. John Fisher had three players honored and one Utica student-athlete was honored.
 
Both the Empire 8 Offensive Player of the Year, Sydney DeGirolamo of St. John Fisher and Defensive Player of the Year, Vicki Arena of Nazareth were first team selections. Logan Chase and Erin Mills of St. John Fisher were also were first team picks. Nazareth’s Katie Lawrence, the 2021 Empire 8 Goalkeeper of the Year, along with teammates Emma Parry and Emma States and Utica College standout Lexi Scaccia were second team selections. All eight student-athletes previously earned 2021 All-Empire 8 first team accolades.

A total of 272 student-athletes were selected in the eight regions for 2021. These student-athletes are now eligible to be named to the national IWLCA All-American team that will be released in June.
 
DeGirolamo, a junior midfielder, was named All-Region for the second time in her career after the Manlius, N.Y. native led Fisher in numerous statistical categories this season. DeGirolamo has accounted for 73 points for the Final Four bound Cardinals, including 35 goals and a team-leading 38 assists. Overall, DeGirolamo is among the national leaders in draw controls with 153 through 19 games. Fisher has won its last 13 games as the 2020 All-American has accounted for at least five points in a game eight times in all.

Chase was also named All-Region for the second time in her career after helping to anchor Fisher's top midfield line. Over 19 starts this season, Chase, a senior, has accounted for 48 points on 36 goals and 12 assists. The Cortland, N.Y. native leads the team in ground balls with 38 and has come away with 54 draws so far on the year in addition to 28 caused turnovers.

Mills, a junior defender, earned All-Region accolades for the first time in her career after a breakout year. Entering the Final Four, Mills leads Fisher and is among the region's leaders in caused turnovers with 33 through 19 games. Mills, a Syracuse, N.Y. native, anchored Fisher's back line with the talented defender being part of two shutouts as Fisher has allowed just 82 goals to its opposition all season. She has scored one goal on the year and ranks second on the team behind Chase with 34 ground balls to her credit.
 
Arena, of East Northport, N.Y., was named to the All-Region team for the second time after earning second-team honors in 2018. In 2021, the senior started all 13 games and contributed two goals and one assist. She led the team in draw controls with 50 and in caused turnovers with 19 and was second in ground balls with 28.

States, of Phoenix, N.Y., led the Golden Flyers in scoring in 2021 with 48 points on 37 goals and 11 assists. The sophomore attack also was second on the team with 27 draw controls. She has amassed 56 goals in her first two seasons.

Parry, a junior from Camillus, N.Y., was a defensive fixture for the Golden Flyers who started all 13 games and had 15 caused turnovers and 18 ground balls.

Lawrence, of Tully, N.Y., started all 13 games in goal for the Golden Flyers in 2021 and had 84 saves for an 8.97 goals-against average and a save percentage of .457. The junior was a two-time Empire 8 Goalie of the Week. She has totaled 122 saves in two seasons as Nazareth's starter.
 
Scaccia led the E8 in points (54) and goals (37) during the regular season. She finished with 62 points (42 goals and 20 assists) in 15 games this year, a mark that ranks fourth in the College's single-season record book. The junior from Whitesboro, N.Y. also added 48 draw controls and 23 caused turnovers from the midfield.
