No. 9 Women's Lacrosse Blanks Cazenovia In Opening Round of NCAA Championship

The nationally-ranked St. Joh Fisher College women's lacrosse team blanked Cazenovia College, 25-0, in the opening round of the NCAA Division IIII Women's Lacrosse Championship on Saturday afternoon at host Franklin and Marshall College.  With the win, Fisher, which is ranked ninth in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association national poll, improved to 15-1 on the year while the Wildcats had their season end at 3-4 overall.

Fisher will advance to the second round of the national championship where it will face No. 6 Catholic University at 1 p.m. on Sunday with the winner advancing to the Sweet 16.

Brittany Halpin led the way for Fisher with seven points after accounting for five goals and two assists while Alyssa Sproule added four goals in the win.  Mackenzie Alexander produced two goals and an assist while Sydney DeGirolamo, who was named the Empire 8 Player of the Year on Monday, netted two goals and a helper.  Kathleen Salanger had three goals at the attack while Alexandra Kopcza had two goals and an assist overall. 

Logan Chase contributed two goals and five draw controls while Bianca Giancona finished the game with two goals.

In goal, Claudia Mocciaro moved to 15-1 after going 30 minutes without facing a shot.  Lilly Goodsell played 30 minutes and was not tested in cage.

After jumping out to a 17-0 edge following the first 30 minutes of play, the Cardinals added to their lead in the second frame with eight more goals before the final whistle sounded.
