Following its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division III National Semifinal late last month, two members of the nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse team have been named 2021 All-Americans as announced by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association.
Junior midfielder Sydney DeGirolamo was named First-Team All-American while senior midfielder Logan Chase was recognized as Second-Team All-American after the duo helped lead the No. 3 Cardinals to their most successful season in team history.
The 2021 Empire 8 Player of the Year, DeGirolamo, who became the program's first-ever First-Team All-America selection, led the team in several statistical categories. A First-Team All-Region honoree, DeGirolamo accounted for a team-leading 78 points including 37 goals. The Manlius, NY native finished the 2021 season with 41 assists, which was tied for the 10th-most in Division III.
Over 20 starts this season, DeGirolamo led the country and set a new single-season program record with 155 draw controls. She authored nine games with at least five points and accounted for five game-winning goals on the season. DeGirolamo ranked fifth on the team with 26 ground balls and contributed eight caused turnovers on the defensive end of the field.
An All-American selection at the conclusion of the 2020 season, DeGirolamo played a significant role in helping to guide Fisher to a regional championship after netting the game-winning goal in the Cardinals' 10-9 triumph over No. 16 William Smith in the Sweet 16. With DeGirolamo on the field, Fisher entered the Final Four having won 13 games in a row.
Chase was named a Second-Team All-American by the IWLCA after helping to anchor Fisher's top midfield line. Over 20 starts this season, Chase finished with 48 points on 36 goals and 12 assists. The Cortland, NY native led the team in ground balls with 45 and played a major role in Fisher's draw control dominance with 56 draws as the Cardinals finished the campaign ranked second in the nation with 310 to their credit.
A First-Team All-Empire 8 selection last month, Chase fired 91 shots including 60 on goal and netted two game-winning goals this season. She was much more than a scoring threat, however, as her 33 caused turnovers were second among her teammates.
The Cardinals concluded the 2021 season at 18-2 after having won the team's ninth consecutive Empire 8 Championship in early May. Fisher would go on to win four games in the NCAA Championship and earned a slew of postseason recognition. In all, six student-athletes were named All-Conference while three would go on to earn All-Region recognition. Lauren Swartz received the NCAA's Elite 90 Award for her academic pedigree while head coach
Linda Michele along with
Mark Michele and
Mary Doyle were tabbed the Empire 8's Coaching Staff of the Year.
