The postseason recognition continued to trickle in for the nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse team as three of its players were applauded for their academic achievements. Seniors Jack Mulvihill and Joe Post, along with junior Ian Evans, were each named to the 2020-21 At-Large Academic All-District Region III team by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
The trio were among just 10 student-athletes from across Region III (New York) to be honored and are now eligible to be named Academic All-Americans, which will be announced by CoSIDA on Wednesday, August 3.
To be considered, a student-athlete must have reached their sophomore year and have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.30. Nominees must have also made a significant impact on their team's success on the field of play. To date, Fisher has had 29 Academic All-America selections with Justin Graham, Allen Murphy and Thomas Pasquale of the baseball program being the most recent.
The most dominant faceoff specialist in program history, Post, who is majoring in Inclusive Sdolescent Education, became the program's first-ever First-Team All-America selection last month after dominating the faceoff game for No. 8 Fisher this season. A three-time United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association All-American, Post was among the Division III leaders as he won over 70 percent of his faceoffs taken (267-for-378). Post's prowess at the faceoff game also sparked Fisher's high-powered offense at times as he owns five goals and two assists.
The Canandaigua corralled a team-high 161 ground balls on the season and concluded the year as Fisher's all-time leader in both ground balls and faceoff wins.
A Biology major and a Second-Team All-American selection at the conclusion of the 2021 season, Mulvihill had another standout year on Fisher's top midfield line. Now a three-time All-American in his career, Mulvihill appeared in 14 games this season and ranked third among his teammates with 47 points. He finished the year with 28 goals, 19 assists and was credited with 23 ground balls and 79 shots.
The accolades also continued to roll in for Evans as the Psychology major was named Second-Team All-American for the first time in his career in June. The 2021 Empire 8 Player of the Year, Evans, who was also named First-Team All-Conference, led Fisher and the conference with 76 total points including 48 goals and 28 assists. Evans, who was named the league's Rookie of the Year in 2019, was responsible for four goals or more in a game six times and was featured in Sportscenter's Top 10 plays earlier this season.
One of the most prolific scorers in program history, Evans produced five points or more in a game on eight occasions and set the program record for the most points registered in a single game on May 15th when he finished with 11 in the Cardinals' win over Maritime College in the opening round of the NCAA Championship.
The Cardinals were included in an elite class of teams after being ranked within the USILA's top 10 for a majority of the year. Fisher captured its second Empire 8 Championship in 2021 and parlayed that into the program's second straight appearance in the NCAA Sweet 16.
