ELMIRA, NY – In its home-opener, the Elmira College Women's Volleyball team cracked the win column in conference play with a 3-0 win over the visiting Pioneers from Utica University. In a very close first two sets, the Soaring Eagles found themselves trailing in the latter part of the third before scoring eight of the final ten points to take the set 25-21. The match featured 21 tie scores, along with 13 lead changes.
Maddie Boucher '24, Calli Vocke '23, and Amelia Martin '23 combined for 26 kills on the evening, while the Soaring Eagles reached double-digit kills in each of the three sets. Asia Curkendall '25 rounded out the Purple & Gold offense, tallying 33 assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Pioneers scored the first three points of the first set to take the early advantage before the Soaring Eagles scored six of the next eight points to take its first lead of the contest, 6-5. Later in the set, Elmira would put together a rally in which it scored eight of ten points which gave the home team a comfortable lead at 17-10 following a kill from Samantha Garry '25.
In the opening set, Martin, Garry, Boucher, and Vocke each recorded three kills, while the Soaring Eagles hit .171 as a team with 15 kills.
After a late rally from the Pioneers which brought the score to 24-23 in advantage of EC, the home team would take the opener with a service error from Madison Maggiore of Utica University.
In the second, the two teams battled to a 12-12 tie before EC scored five consecutive points which included a pair of kills from Morgan Richardson '25, taking a 17-12 lead. From there, the Pioneers would put together a rally of their own to tie the set at 20-20 before a pair of kills from Boucher, one from Martin, and a pair of attacking errors allowed EC to take a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-21 second-set victory.
With the third set tied at 7-7, the Pioneers would take a 13-9 lead after scoring six of the next seven points. Trailing by as many as five, Elmira would score four consecutive points with Sydney Meyers '23 at the service position to cut its deficit to just one. Down by a pair, Elmira would score eight of the final nine points, capped off with consecutive kills from Martin to take the third and final set, 25-21.
The Soaring Eagles finished the match hitting .174 as a team, compared to .072 for the Pioneers. Elmira out-assisted the Pioneers 38-21, while service aces were even across the board (8).

The Soaring Eagles return to the court tomorrow morning when they host Keuka (11:00 AM) and the University of Rochester (3:00 PM) in a tri-match.
