THE MATCHUP: In 1988, Cortland and Ithaca each entered the annual Cortaca Jug game with an 8-0 record, leading to the contest being billed as the "Upstate New York Game of the Century." For the first time since that game, Cortland and Ithaca are both unbeaten prior to their rivalry game, this time with 9-0 records, to set up the "Upstate New York Game of the Century II." And the stakes are raised even more as the game will be played at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx in front of a crowd of possibly more than 40,000 fans.
Cortland and Ithaca are both nationally ranked and have already clinched automatic berths into the NCAA Division III tournament. The Empire 8 champion Red Dragons are ranked ninth nationally by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and 11th by D3football.com. The Liberty League champion Bombers are ranked 11th by the AFCA and 12th by D3football.com. Cortland and Ithaca are two of 16 remaining undefeated Division III teams.
THE SERIES: Cortland and Ithaca are playing for the Cortaca Jug for the 63rd time in 2022. The schools actually started playing in 1930 and have met every year since 1948, other than in 2020 when the season was canceled. Ithaca leads the overall series 42-34-3 and the Jug series 37-25.
In 1959, friends and team captains Tom Decker of Cortland and Dick Carmean of Ithaca originated the Cortaca Jug as the prize for the winner of the game between the schools located about 20 miles apart on Route 13. The original jug was purchased at a yard sale. Each year, the game's result is printed on the Jug. The first Jug ran out of room for scores in the mid-1980s, necessitating a second Jug. That Jug ran out of room for scores after the 2015 season, and a third Jug was created to list the scores beginning in 2016.
Ithaca's 37-25 Jug series lead does not include the Bombers' 1988 NCAA playoff win over the Red Dragons.
Cortland won 28-27 in Cortland last year, breaking a streak of three straight Ithaca wins (2017-19, including a 32-20 win at MetLife Stadium in 2019 in front of a Division III record crowd of 45,161). Prior to that Ithaca streak, Cortland won seven straight meetings in the series from 2010-16.
For two years (2015 and 2016) the teams met as Empire 8 foes. Ithaca, however, joined the Liberty League in 2017. Prior to 2015, Cortland was a member of the New Jersey Athletic Conference from 2000-14 and an independent before that. Cortland clinched the 2015 Empire 8 title with an 11-8 win at Ithaca.
In 2014, Cortland won at home over the Bombers, 23-20, in one of the most wild and memorable finishes in the rivalry's history. The Red Dragons trailed 20-17 and were lining up for a potential game-tying field goal with no timeouts left and the clock winding down. Holder Luke Hinton was late getting on the field, and he was actually looking back at the kicker when a low snap hit him in the leg. Hinton recovered, rolled to his left and threw the game-winning TD pass to Jon Mannix as time expired. The play was recognized as the nation's number-three play on ESPN's SportsCenter Top 10 that evening.
Of the last 24 games in the series (1997-2021), 17 have been decided by eight points or less. In the previous 62 Cortaca Jug games, Cortland is 8-5 in games decided by 1-3 points and 11-7 in games decided by 4-8 points, but Ithaca is 9-3 when the margin is 9-16 points and 16-3 when a team wins by 17 or more.
CORTLAND CAPSULE: Cortland won its second straight Empire 8 title with a 6-0 league mark and is off to a 9-0 start for the second consecutive season. The Red Dragons began the year with non-league home wins versus Wittenberg and TCNJ and a road victory at Buffalo State. Cortland outscored its opponents, 274-81, in its six league victories.
Offensively, Cortland ranks fourth nationally in scoring (50.1 points/game) and total offense (534.2 yards/game), 12th in rushing offense (246.1 yards/game) and 27th in passing offense (288.1 yards/game). Jaden Alfanostjohn averages 112.8 rushing yards per game (902 yards in eight games) with 15 touchdowns, along with 10 catches for 178 yards and a score. Ashton Capone ran for a school-record 282 yards starting in place of Alfanostjohn two weeks ago and has 658 yards on the ground this season (73.1 per game) with seven touchdowns. Zac Boyes is 131-of-185 passing (70.8 pct.) for 2,391 yards and 24 touchdowns with six interceptions. JJ Laap has a team-high 32 receptions for 814 yards and five touchdowns in nine games, CJ Messina has caught 30 passes for 374 yards and three scores in nine outings, and Cole Burgess has 28 receptions for 667 yards and 10 scores in eight games. Rashad Tucker has 27 catches for 344 yards and five scores.
Cortland ranks in the top 40 nationally in scoring defense (25th, 13.7 points/game), rushing defense (37th, 91.4 yards/game) and total defense (37th, 269.1 yards/game). Devin McArthur leads the Red Dragons with 47 tackles, followed by Craig Ackerman and Zack Thuesen with 42 tackles apiece. Joshua Cordero has picked off six passes, three of which he's returned for touchdowns, and he also has broken up six passes. Mark Noel has scored two defensive touchdowns on a fumble return and an interception return.
Placekicker Mike Baloga has connected on a school single-season record 53 PAT kicks (in 56 attempts) and is 5-for-8 on field goal tries. Patrick Luby averages 36.2 yards per punt on 17 kicks, and 34 of his 68 kickoffs have resulted in touchbacks. Tucker averages 26.6 yards per kickoff return on 10 tries, including a 94-yard return for a touchdown at Brockport, and he averages 9.4 yards per return on eight punt returns.
Curt Fitzpatrick was named Cortland's head coach in February 2020 and enters the game with an 20-1 (.950) overall record. In his two seasons on the field, after the 2020 season was canceled, he's led the Red Dragons to a pair of Empire 8 titles. In 2021 he guided the Red Dragons to an 11-1 season, the Empire 8 crown, and the NCAA second round. Fitzpatrick and his assistants were named the Empire 8 Coaching Staff of the Year. Fitzpatrick previously served as head coach at Morrisville for seven seasons from 2013-19 and guided the Mustangs to four winning seasons and three postseason ECAC bowl games. His 2014 squad finished 9-2 and claimed a share of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) title, earning him NJAC Co-Coach of the Year and D3football.com East Region Coach of the Year honors.
Fitzpatrick served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Utica College from 2008-12. He graduated from St. John Fisher College in 2004 with a bachelor's degree in management. A standout quarterback for the Cardinals, Fitzpatrick served as a team captain and was a four-year letterman. In his final season, he earned Empire 8 all-conference honors and set school passing records in touchdowns (30) and yards (2,366) while leading the program to a 10-2 overall record and an NCAA Sweet 16 appearance. He returned to his hometown of Fulton, N.Y., to coach quarterbacks and wide receivers at Fulton High School in 2005 and he served as quarterbacks coach at St. John Fisher for two seasons from 2006-07. During those two years the Cardinals went a combined 23-4, won two Empire 8 crowns, and advanced to the NCAA semifinals (2006) and quarterfinals (2007).
A LOOK AT...ITHACA COLLEGE: Ithaca won its first Liberty League title since joining the conference in 2017 and earned an NCAA tournament automatic berth with a 6-0 league record. The Bombers are off to their first 9-0 start since winning their first 11 games, including two NCAA playoff games, in the 1986 season before losing to Salisbury in the national semifinals.
Ithaca opened the season with non-league wins at Bridgewater State (Mass.) and home versus Brockport and Alfred. The Bombers' first four Liberty League wins were by a combined 178-27 score, but things tightened up during the last two weeks with a 13-10 home win versus RPI and a 31-18 league-clinching win at Union last weekend. Ithaca ranks ninth nationally in Division III in scoring defense (9.1 points/game) and 17th in total defense (234.7 yards/game), including a 16th rank in passing defense (142.3 yards/game). Offensively, the Bombers are 36th nationally in rushing offense (201.0 yards/game) and 31st in scoring offense (38.8 points/game).
Running back Jake Williams has run for 613 yards and eight touchdowns on 126 carries. A.J. Wingfield is 144-of-211 passing (68.3 pct.) for 1,535 yards and 13 touchdowns with just three interceptions. Michael Anderson has caught 47 passes for 568 yards and three scores and Julien Deumaga has 21 receptions for 285 yards and three touchdowns. Matt DeSimpliciis leads the Ithaca defense with 64 total tackles and 5.5 sacks. Michael Roumes has 48 tackles and Tommy Moran has intercepted two passes and shares the team lead with five pass breakups.
Roumes also serves as the team's punter and averages 35.5 yards per punt on 22 kicks. Nicholas Bahamonde ranks fifth nationally with 1.2 made field goals per game (11-for-17) with a long of 48 yards. Anderson has returned two punts for touchdowns this fall and averages 14.8 yards per return, while Anthony D'Addetta is fifth nationally with 28.3 yards per kickoff return with one score.
Michael Toerper (pronounced Ter-per) is in his first season as Ithaca's head coach. He previously served as the Bombers' defensive coordinator for three seasons from 2017-19 before becoming the safeties coach at Division I Holy Cross for two seasons. In 2021, the Crusaders finished 10-3 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA FCS playoffs. Toerper also was an assistant coach for seven years at Johns Hopkins University from 2010-16 and served one season as an assistant at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. A 2008 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, Toerper played three seasons as a defensive back and special teams contributor for the Panthers, earning a scholarship after joining the team as a walk-on.
NOTEBOOK:
* Five current Cortland players also played in the 2019 Cortaca Jug game at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey that set the Division III attendance record with 45,161 fans. Wide receiver Cole Burgess and cornerback Joshua Cordero started in the game, while receiver JJ Laap, linebacker John Listwan and offensive lineman Daquan Griffin saw time off the bench.
* Cortland has won 19 straight regular-season games dating back to the start of last season, breaking the school record for consecutive regular-season wins originally set during the 1988 (10-0 regular) and 1989 (8-0 start) seasons.
* Cortland has not trailed this season, and the Red Dragons have been tied for only 56 minutes and 18 seconds out of a possible 540 minutes. Of that 56:18, only 6:25 has been a tie that wasn't 0-0 (7-7 for 3:00 versus Wittenberg and 7-7 for 3:25 at Brockport). Ithaca did not trail in its first eight games this season; the Bombers fell behind for the first time last week during their win at Union.
* Cortland is off to a 9-0 start for the second straight year and the fourth time overall. Twice Cortland extended its 9-0 record to 10-0 – in 1988 and last season. In both of those cases, the Red Dragons also won their first NCAA playoff game and finished the season 11-1. In 2008, Cortland's perfect season ended with a home loss to Ithaca. The Red Dragons won two NCAA playoff games that season and finished the year 11-2.
* Cortland did not punt in three of its games this fall (home versus Wittenberg, at Buffalo State and Utica). The last time prior to this season that the Red Dragons didn't punt was during a 67-6 win at Wilkes in the second game of the 1991 season.
* Cortland ranks fourth nationally in Division III in scoring at 50.1 points per game, trailing only North Central (57.8), Aurora (51.0) and Mount Union (50.8). The school single-season record is 41.4 points per game, set last season. Cortland has eclipsed the 60-point mark three times this fall – the first time in school history the Red Dragons have had three games of 60-plus points. The Red Dragons also are fourth nationally in total offensive yardage at 534.2 yards per game, behind only North Central (565.2), Wabash (557.6) and UMass Dartmouth (546.2).
* Cortland is third nationally in Division III with six defensive touchdowns. Brockport and Endicott are tied for the national lead with seven defensive scores apiece. In addition to Joshua Cordero's three interception returns for scores (versus TCNJ, Buffalo State and Brockport), the Red Dragons had Mark Noel and Craig Ackerman return fumbles for touchdowns against Hartwick, and Noel returned an interception for a touchdown versus St. John Fisher.

* Joshua Cordero is tied for sixth nationally in Division III with 0.8 interception per game (six in eight games). Cordero picked off a pass versus Wittenberg, had three interceptions versus TCNJ, and registered one pick each at Buffalo State and Brockport. He's returned three of his interceptions for touchdowns (TCNJ, Buffalo State and Brockport), which is tied for first in Division III nationally with Jake Binkowski of Carroll (Wis.). The Cortland record for interceptions in a season is eight, held by both Joe Lopez in 2010 and Steve Daly in 1975.
Cordero has tied a school record for defensive touchdowns scored in a season with three, set originally by Chuck Eich in 2003. Eich (pronounced IKE) had three interception returns for touchdowns that season, with one of them coming following a lateral after a teammate's interception.
* Jaden Alfanostjohn is tied for fifth nationally in Division III in scoring (12.0 points/game) and rushing touchdowns (15), tied for 10th in total touchdowns (16), and 16th in rushing (112.8 yards/game) despite missing Cortland's game at Alfred on Oct. 29 due to injury.
* Ashton Capone is averaging 6.0 yards per carry on 109 rushes this fall. The school record for rushing average per attempt, with a minimum of 100 carries, is 6.2 yards per carry by Dorian Myles in 2012 (123 carries, 765 yards). Second on the list is Jaden Alfanostjohn at 5.7 yards per carry last season (133 carries, 757 yards). Alfanostjohn is currently averaging 5.8 yards per carry this fall on 156 rushes.
* Zac Boyes is second nationally Division III with a 215.7 passing efficiency rating through nine games. The rating reflects four statistics – completion percentage, passing yards per pass attempt, touchdown passes per pass attempt and interceptions per pass attempt. Boyes set a school single-game record (minimum 10 attempts) with his 330.3 rating versus TCNJ (10-for-13, 235 yards, four touchdowns, no interceptions) on Sept. 10. The school single-season record is 177.0, set by Brees Segala last year. Boyes is first nationally with 18.3 yards per completion and 12.9 yards per pass attempt. Two Cortland receivers are ranked in the top 10 nationally in receiving yards per catch – JJ Laap is fifth at 25.4 yards per catch and Cole Burgess is ninth at 23.8 yards per reception.
* Cortland has been a member of the Empire 8 conference since 2015. The Red Dragons won the outright league title and NCAA automatic bid both this year and in 2021 and were co-champions in both 2015 and 2019, earning an NCAA bid in 2015. Cortland also finished second or tied for second in the league in 2017 and 2018. Cortland previously competed in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) for 15 seasons from 2000-14 and finished in at least a tie for first place six times.
Three current Empire 8 members - Cortland, Brockport and Morrisville - at one point played in the NJAC and are affiliate members of the E8 in football only. The other league teams - Alfred, Hartwick, St. John Fisher and Utica - are full conference members. Hilbert College will join the Empire 8 as an affiliate football member in the fall of 2024.
