PITTSBURGH, PA – Unbeaten Calvin University (18-0-1) scored a goal in each half to defeat a resilient Nazareth team on Friday, 2-0, in the first round of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championships, hosted by Carnegie Mellon. The Golden Flyers season comes to a close with a final record of 8-5-7. Calvin advances to the round of 32 against Carnegie Mellon after the Tartans defeated Bryn Athyn 6-0 in the first contest.
On a rainy day, quality scoring chances were hard to come by with two strong defensive squads. Nazareth came into the contest allowing just .84 goals per game, while the Knights surrendered just two goals all season. At the end of the contest Calvin had a 6-4 edge in shots.
Calvin, who had been dangerous on set pieces all season, were able to deliver on two in each half.
The Knights struck first in the 26th minute off a throw-in deep in the Golden Flyers defensive third. A long throw to the penalty spot squirted out to Calvin's Sophie Muller, who was able to drive a low shot into the back of the net.
The first half saw just two shots, both for Calvin.
Seven minutes into the second half, the Knights made good on a corner kick. After the service was initially headed straight out, Sophie Mueller blasted a shot towards the goal that was re-directed in front by Mia Judd to make it 2-0.
Annika Monfort made two saves for Nazareth in the losing effort. Alexandra Skoda led Nazareth with two shots on goal.
The Golden Flyers advanced to the NCAA Tournament after winning their 12th Empire 8 Championship last weekend.
