2022 Empire 8 and Allegheny Empire Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships to Take Place February 16-19

Alfred University, Hartwick College, Nazareth College and Utica College will compete at the 2022 Empire 8 Championships from Wednesday, February 16 to Saturday, February 19 from the Webster Aquatic Center in Webster, NY. Preliminary action begins the final three days at 10 a.m. with the finals taking place at 5 p.m. each evening. Nazareth is looking to repeat as Empire 8 Champions.
 
In conjunction, the four Empire 8 institutions will join forces with Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference programs Alfred State College, Medaille College, Penn St. Altoona, Penn St. Behrend, Pitt-Bradford and Wells College for the second Allegheny Empire Championships. At the conclusion of the meet, an Allegheny Empire Women’s and Men’s Champion will be crowned as well as a Male and Female Swimmer and Diver of the Meet. The top three finishers in each event will also be recognized. Nazareth won the inaugural championship in 2020.
 
The 2021 Empire 8 and Allegheny Empire Championship meet was not held due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

2022 Empire 8 Team Capsules (Order Based on 2020 Championship Finish)
 
Nazareth is looking to repeat as Empire 8 Champions in 2022. Senior Tom Griffin, the 2018-19 Rookie of the Year, is the two-time defending champion in the 100-yard backstroke. He enters the meet as the fastest E8 swimmer in the 50-yard backstroke and is a top contender in the sprint freestyle and all three backstroke events. Junior Dylan Long the 2020 Empire 8 Co-Rookie of the Year, won the Empire 8 Championships in the 200-, 500- and 1,650-yard freestyle events in 2020, is expected to contend for all three titles once again in 2022. Cameron Fairley enters the championship meet with the top time among all Empire 8 swimmers in the 500-yard freestyle, while Joseph Knapp has the top time in the 200-yard freestyle. Sean Payrot and Ryan Hough are also top contenders in the sprint freestyle events. Chad Buccella, Marco Salvatore and Luke Winkelman will be expected to contend in the breaststroke events. Will Danaher and Adam DelGrand will look to contribute in the butterfly. Salvatore, Winkelman, DelGrand and Buccella are Nazareth’s top contender in the individual medley events. Jacob Smith will vie for the league titles in both the 1- and 3-meter diving events.
 
Hartwick is looking for its first Empire 8 title since 2006. The Hawks won a league-high eight dual matches in 2021-22 and boast a deep group of student-athletes. Diallo Marshall was the 2020 Empire 8 Co-Rookie of the Year and is enjoying another excellent season for the Hawks. The defending Empire 8 Champion in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle, Marshall, enters the 2022 championship with the top time among all student-athletes in both events in addition to the 50-yard butterfly. Marshall will team with Michael Schultz in the butterfly events, as Schulz is the current Empire 8 leader in the 100- and 200-yard butterfly in addition to the 200-yard individual medley. Schultz is also strong swimmer in the backstroke. Sophomore Brady Haraden enters the championship meet with the top time in both the 1,000- and 1,650-yard freestyle in 2021-22 and will be joined by teammate Nicholas Canney to form a strong duo in the distance event.  Colin Leonard is a one of the league’s top breaststroke swimmers. Reed Sinkinson will also contend in the sprint freestyle, while Devin Masongong is a versatile swimmer, who will excel in the backstroke and individual medley events. The duo of divers Jack Armstrong and Gabriel Castro are a formidable 1-2 punch. Armstrong has the top score in the 1-meter among all E8 divers this season, while Castro has the top score in the 3-meters.
 
Alfred enters the 2020 Empire 8 Championship looking to improve off of its third place finish in 2020. Sophomore Emiliano Terrazas is having a tremendous season for the Saxons. He enters the championship as the fastest E8 student-athlete in the 50-, 100- and 200-yard breaststroke and both the 100- and 400-yard individual medley events. Terrazas is a three-time E8 Athlete of the Week in 2020-21. Classmate Fernando Lagos has garnered a pair of E8 weekly accolades this season and is a standout in all three butterfly events. Will LaMastus has the second fastest time in the 500-yard freestyle and 50-yard backstroke, while Jordan Fixsen will be a top contender in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Will LaMastus enters the meet with the fastest time among all Empire 8 swimmers in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events, while Colby Watkins, Paul Tuttle and Phillip Volaski will also be top contenders in the backstroke events. In addition to Terrazas, Justin Jarmer and Wade LaMastus are strong contenders in the breaststroke events.
 
Utica is looking to improve off a fourth place finish in the 2020 championship. The Pioneers won five dual matches during the regular season. Jackson Sorbello, who earned Empire 8 Athlete of the Week honors earlier in the season, will look to lead the Pioneers in the sprint events, while Coleman Barry is Utica’s top distance swimmer. Barry, Chase Dobbertin and Nick Massa will look to earn points in the backstroke events. Michael Colocho, along with Barry and Sorbello are also standouts in the individual medley and butterfly.
