Junior Riley Corey of the St. John Fisher College women's track and field team was applauded for her excellence in the classroom on Thursday afternoon after being named Academic All-District in Region III by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Corey, who is one of just 10 student-athletes from New York to be recognized, is now eligible to be named an Academic All-American as that will be formally announced on June 22. To be considered, a student-athlete must be a sophomore and have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.30. Nominees must also make a significant impact on their team's success on the field of play.
A nursing major with a 3.95 grade-point average, Corey has been an integral part of both the women's track and field team and the Cardinals' cross country program. During the cross country season, Corey was named the Empire 8's Runner of the Year after guiding the Cardinals to their second consecutive conference title. The Waterloo, NY native became the first student-athlete in team history to qualify for the NCAA Division III Championship where she placed within the top third of all competitors.
Corey continued to set a high standard during the indoor track and field season after earning two All-Conference finishes en route to the team's third consecutive Empire 8 crown. From there, Corey was further lauded after garnering an All-Region selection by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The distance runner further cemented herself in program history during the outdoor season after helping lead the Cardinals to another league title following a win in the 10,000-meter run and a third place showing in the 5,000-meter run.
