Brockport Hosts St. John Fisher in 17th Annual Courage Bowl Saturday as Conference Play Begins

BROCKPORT, NY – The SUNY Brockport football team will be hosting St. John Fisher University at Bob Boozer Field on Saturday, October 1 for Courage Bowl XVII. Under the lights both teams will also be opening up Empire 8 Conference play, with kickoff set for 6 pm.

Tickets: The game is a staple in the community and is also one of the largest fundraising opportunities for Camp Good Days and Special Times. Tickets are $5 online and they are currently available here: https://brockportsg.universitytickets.com/. Tickets will also be available for purchase at the ticket booth on the day of the game. Tickets on the day of the game will be $5 adults, $3 Senior Citizens and non-Brockport students. Children under five and SUNY Brockport students/faculty/staff get in FREE with ID.

Courage Bowl XVII: For the game, Camp Good Days selects honorary coaches and cheerleaders for both teams. These are Camp Good Days campers who have been diagnosed with cancer and would normally not be allowed to participate in a real football game. The Camp Good Days Courage Bowl gives these campers that opportunity.  At the conclusion of the Courage Bowl, the Teddi Trophy, named in memory of Teddi Mervis, Gary Mervis' daughter and the inspiration behind Camp Good Days, will be presented, which will later be inscribed with the date of the game, final score of the game, names of the honorary coaches/cheerleaders and the names of one player from each team who displays exceptional leadership and sportsmanship.

Last Year at Fisher: In the 2021 matchup between Brockport and Fisher featured a dominant showing from Brockport. The team had an explosive start with 17 points in the first quarter, on the way to a 34-7 win on the road. The Golden Eagles totaled 368 yards of offense and only gave up 171 yards on defense. They held Fisher to -2 rushing yards in the contest and forced three interceptions, including a 72-yard pick six. The victory marked Brockport's fourth consecutive win over Fisher in the Courage Bowl.
 
Brockport vs Fisher: Saturday's meeting between the two Empire 8 foes will mark the 27th time in program history they have faced off. Brockport has the all-time lead in the series over Fisher, 18-8, including four straight wins coming into the upcoming matchup. During this recent string of wins, the Golden Eagles are averaging 34.5 points per game and allowing just 5.25 points a game on defense against Fisher.
 
Meet the Cardinals: The St. John Fisher Cardinals enter this weekend 2-2 overall as they begin Empire 8 play against Brockport on Saturday. Last week they pulled out a tight, 3-0, win over RPI at home. Fisher is 2-0 at home and 0-2 on the road so far this year. Before losses to Framingham and Hobart, the Cardinals took down Buffalo State, 62-21, in week one. Running back Malachi Duvall is one of the top rushers in the Empire 8, averaging 94.8 yards a game. Aaron Chase has been the starting QB this season, throwing for 481 yards and three scores through four games. On the defensive side of the ball, Joe Miscia is second in the conference with 43 total tackles.

Before the Bye Week: In week four of the 2022 season, Brockport had its bye week to utilize in preparation for the Courage Bowl. However, in the week three the team was on the road against the University of Rochester. Brockport defeated U of R, 23-3, improving to 2-1 overall. The defense held the leading rusher in the nation to just 64 yards on the ground and forced two turnovers. Rashad Law broke the century mark on the ground for the first time in his career at Brockport with 109 yards on 21 carries for one touchdown.
 

 
The Golden Eagle Defense: After a strong showing in week three against the highly ranked U of R rushing attack, Brockport's defense remains a top 25 unit in the country. Allowing an average of just 226 yard per game, the team ranks 21st in the nation in total defense. Giving up 11.33 points per game, Brockport has only allowed an opponent to score double-digits once so far this season.
 
Ground and Pound: The Golden Eagles continue to favor the run game offensively, putting up 177 rushing yards in the win over Rochester on 37 carries. With 109 yards and a touchdown on 21 rushes, Rashad Law broke the century mark for the first time in his collegiate career. The offense is averaging 139.7 yards on the ground per game.
 
Field General: Todd Simonds was solid behind the center against the U of R Yellowjackets in week three. Simonds was 13-for-20 through the air with 108 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 32 yards and a touchdown in the contest. So far this year Brockport's quarterback has thrown for 516 yards and two scores.
 
Go No Further: Captain Ben Marshall is the leading tackler for the defensive unit, making 18 total tackles (9 solo, 9 assists). Ben Damiani and Ben Robinson have both come up for 17 stops so far this season from the linebacker spots. John DeRidder has recorded a team-high 11 solo tackles. In the trenches, Jordan Harris has gotten credit for a total of 13 tackles, including 2.5 tackles for a loss.
 
Receivers Room: Jared Maurino has the only two receiving touchdowns for Brockport so far this season. Maurino has hauled in nine catches for 111 yards through three games. Louis Usera is the other wideout to break 100 yards this season, tallying eight receptions for 101 yards.

In the Secondary: Last game, Raylens Boutin made five solo tackles and snagged his first interception of the season to lead the Brockport secondary. Giovanni Frisenda is leading the team with three pass breakups, while Boutin has two. Purcelle Brown has made plays as well, coming up with one breakup and one pick.
 
Give Him a Chance: Averaging 18.5 yards per punt return on special teams, Derrick Chance is the ninth ranked punt returner in the nation. Chance recorded his longest return of the year so far in week one, with a 42 yarder against Framingham.
 
Big Red's Big Boot: Brockport's punter, Dan Giangrasso is currently the highest ranked punter in the Empire 8 and is 11th in the nation. Giangrasso is averaging 42.0 yards per punt so far this year on 12 attempts. His longest of the season was a 56 yarder and he has pinned the opponent inside the 20 four times.
