UTICA, NY – En route to its 54-42 victory over the Pioneers from Utica University, head coach Thad Phillips would go on to pick up his 100th collegiate head coaching win on Friday evening as the Elmira College women's basketball team picked up its fourth consecutive Empire 8 victory.
After leading by just four at halftime, the Soaring Eagles would go on to outscore the Pioneers 18-11 in the third quarter and never looked back, improving its overall record to 8-4 on the season. Nevaeh Winston '25 paced the Soaring Eagles offensively, leading the team with 12 points while Desiree Roy '25, Olivia Ayres '25, and Taylor Jung '25 each chipped in eight points apiece.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Much like Elmira's last contest against Hartwick on Saturday, offense was kept to a minimum in the first half, with Elmira leading the Pioneers at the break 22-18. In the opening half, the Soaring Eagles would force Utica into 19 turnovers which resulted in half of its points (11) coming from turnovers. Taylor Albrecht '22 paced Elmira in the opening half with four points and five steals, while Laura Bogota '25 chipped in four points as well.
In the first half, Elmira held the opposition to just 25.0% shooting from the field, compared to 30.2% for EC. Despite its first half lead, the Soaring Eagles were unable to convert a shot from beyond the arc in the frame, going 0-for-8 in the half compared to four made three-pointers for the Pioneers.
In the second half, the Soaring Eagles would outscore the Pioneers 18-11, which included a 7-of-17 effort from the floor, while knocking down its first shot from deep. Leading 40-29 heading into the final frame, the Purple & Gold would hold Utica to just 4-of-11 from the floor in the last quarter, while holding the opposition to no more than four made field goals in any quarter of the contest.
Overall, the Soaring Eagles would force Utica into 31 turnovers compared to just 12 of its own, while outsourcing Utica 21-11 in the points off turnovers category. Additionally, Elmira found the majority of its success in the paint, where it would score 34 points from.
