Roy’s Last-Second Jumper Sends Elmira Past Medaille, 56-55

ELMIRA, NY – Desiree Roy '25 hit a last-second jumper and Nevaeh Winston '25 tallied 15 points as the Elmira College women's basketball program erased a nine-point deficit at halftime to defeat Medaille University 56-55 on Tuesday inside Speidel Gymnasium in an Empire 8 matchup.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Medaille would stretch its halftime lead early in the third quarter to 13 points before Olivia Ayres '25 knocked down a 3-pointer for the Soaring Eagles to trim the deficit to 36-26. That trey would spark a rally for the Purple & Gold as Winston followed with a pair of buckets to pull Elmira within a 36-33 score with just over five minutes left in the third quarter.

The Mavericks worked to build their lead back to eight points at 45-37 with just over a minute to play in the frame before Alleney Klunk '24 connected on a 3-pointer off an assist from Laura Bogota '25 to make it 45-40 heading to the fourth quarter.

Elmira would keep the Mavericks' lead to single digits through the majority of the fourth quarter as Medaille held a 55-48 advantage with 2:51 left on the clock. Roy would open the final stretch of the comeback for the Soaring Eagles following a layup to make it 55-50. Another layup from Roy followed by a layup from Winston with 38 ticks left on the clock cut the Medaille lead to 55-54.

A turnover by Medaille with 16 seconds left in the contest would set up one final possession for Elmira. Bogota would find Roy in the paint with five seconds remaining to give the Purple & Gold a 56-55 lead before a final turnover by the Mavericks sound the buzzer to secure the victory.

In a contest that saw only three lead changes, the Soaring Eagles held the lead for 1:34 and scored 33 points off of 25 turnovers by the Mavericks. The Soaring Eagles tallied 15 offensive boards and scored 20 second-chance points while adding 36 points inside the paint.

Roy finished the contest with 12 points, while Bogota added 11 points, four assists, and two steals. Winston dropped a game-high 15 points for Elmira to go along with seven rebounds and six steals.
