ONEONTA, NY – The St. John Fisher University football team were on the road on Saturday and faced off against Empire 8 opponent, Hartwick College. After overcoming an early 14-3 deficit, the Cardinals went on to defeat the Hawks by a final score of 38-21. The win puts Fisher at 4-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
The first quarter of action was uneventful for both teams, with no one running more then five plays in any one drive. The story changed in the second, when the Hawks converted key plays. After a Fisher missed field goal, Hartwick scored on a 79-yard pitch and catch to put the team ahead 7-0. After a good field goal by Fisher to put them on the board, the Hawks worked a methodical nine play, 50-yard drive to score another touchdown. At the break, Hartwick led 14-3.
After adjusting the gameplan at halftime, the Cardinals were able to open the second half with a ten play, 50-yard drive that was capped off by a Peyton Nolan touchdown. The defense then forced the Hawks to punt, and Fisher took their first lead at 17-14 after going 46 yards in six plays. Aaron Chase tossed a two-yard touchdown to put the team in front. The scoring continued into the fourth quarter after the Cardinals forced a three-and-out. At the end of eight plays, Nolan rushed in for his second score of the day.
The defense continued to play well, recording an interception thanks to Trent Sherman and forcing another three and out. Fisher added to their lead with Nolan tallying another touchdown after a five play drive. Following another interception by the Fisher defense, Giovanni DiCaprio rushed for 53 yards on four rushes, to set up a Chase touchdown pass to Jason Britton, their second link up of the day. Hartwick added their third touchdown of the evening in the final moments of the game, but it was Fisher that came away with the 38-21 win.
Up next for the Cardinals is a home matchup against no. 17 ranked SUNY Cortland. The contest is slated for a 12 p.m. kick-off.
