CORTLAND, NY - The Cortland football team travels to Ithaca for the 64th annual Cortaca Jug rivalry game to close out the 2023 regular season. Both teams enter the game 8-1 and nationally ranked - Cortland is 15th in the latest D3football.com poll and 16th in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) poll, while Ithaca is ranked 14th by both organizations. The game from Bertino Field at Butterfield Stadium in Ithaca is officially sold out.

For the second straight year, both teams enter the game having already won their respective league titles - Cortland in the Empire 8 and Ithaca in the Liberty League - to earn NCAA Division III tournament automatic berths. The outcome of the Cortaca Jug game will likely have a major impact on each team's tournament seeding and potential first-round hosting opportunity.

THE SERIES: Cortland and Ithaca are playing for the Cortaca Jug for the 64th time in 2023. The schools actually started playing in 1930 and have met every year since 1948, other than in 2020 when the season was canceled. Ithaca leads the overall series 43-34-3 and the Jug series 38-25. Ithaca's Jug series lead does not include the Bombers' 1988 NCAA playoff win over the Red Dragons.

In 1959, friends and team captains Tom Decker of Cortland and Dick Carmean of Ithaca originated the Cortaca Jug as the prize for the winner of the game between the schools located about 20 miles apart on Route 13. The original jug was purchased at a yard sale. Each year, the game's result is printed on the Jug. The first Jug ran out of room for scores in the mid-1980s, necessitating a second Jug. That Jug ran out of room for scores after the 2015 season, and a third Jug was created to list the scores beginning in 2016.

Two of the recent matchups between the teams drew the two largest crowds in Division III history. Ithaca won both of those games - a 32-20 decision at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey in 2019 with a Division III attendance record of 45,161, and a 34-17 win at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx last year with a crowd of 40,232. This year's game marks the first time Ithaca is hosting the Cortaca Jug game on its campus since 2017.

Cortland's last win over the Bombers was a 28-27 victory at home in 2021. That win broke a streak of three straight Ithaca wins (2017-19). Prior to that Ithaca streak, Cortland won seven straight meetings in the series from 2010-16. For two years (2015 and 2016) the teams met as Empire 8 foes. Ithaca, however, joined the Liberty League in 2017. Prior to 2015, Cortland was a member of the New Jersey Athletic Conference from 2000-14 and an independent before that. Cortland clinched the 2015 Empire 8 title with an 11-8 win at Ithaca.

In 2014, Cortland won at home over the Bombers, 23-20, in one of the most wild and memorable finishes in the rivalry's history. The Red Dragons trailed 20-17 and were lining up for a potential game-tying field goal with no timeouts left and the clock winding down. Holder Luke Hinton was late getting on the field, and he was actually looking back at the kicker when a low snap hit him in the leg. Hinton recovered, rolled to his left and threw the game-winning TD pass to Jon Mannix as time expired. The play was recognized as the nation's number-three play on ESPN's SportsCenter Top 10 that evening.

Of the last 25 games in the series (1997-2022), 17 have been decided by eight points or less. In the previous 63 Cortaca Jug games, Cortland is 8-5 in games decided by 1-3 points and 11-7 in games decided by 4-8 points, but Ithaca is 9-3 when the margin is 9-16 points and 17-3 when a team wins by 17 or more.

CORTLAND CAPSULE:  Cortland secured its third straight outright Empire 8 title with a 41-17 home win over Brockport last Saturday. Cortland finished its Empire 8 schedule with a 6-0 record. Brockport, which entered the game ranked first nationally in total defense (155.1 yds./game) and third in scoring defense (5.4 points/game), fell to 4-1 in the conference and 7-2 overall.

Cole Burgess caught nine passes for 245 yards and three touchdowns, tying the Cortland single-game TD reception record he already held a share of. Safety Sam Cotton registered 10 tackles and had one of Cortland's five interceptions. Burgess and Cotton were both named to the D3football.com National Team of the Week as well as earning Empire 8 weekly honors (Offensive and Co-Defensive Player of the Week). Zac Boyes completed 15-of-24 passes for 308 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for a score. Mike Baloga made 39-yard and 26-yard field goals and all five of his PAT kicks. Baloga set school records for PAT kicks in a season (63) and career (122); he held the previous season record with 59 last year, and the previous career record was 118 by Marc Corrado from 2008-11. Baloga has made a school-record 82 consecutive PAT kicks dating back to last season.

For the season, Boyes is 141-of-194 passing (72.7 percent) for 2,278 yards and 28 touchdowns with just one interception. Burgess has 41 receptions for 736 yards and nine scores and JJ Laap has caught 40 passes for 782 yards and 11 touchdowns. Jaden AlfanoStJohn averages 88.8 rushing yards per game, including 117 last week, and he's scored 10 touchdowns (nine rushing, one receiving). Ashton Capone averages 51.3 yards per game on the ground and has scored 11 touchdowns (10 rushing, one receiving).

Linebacker Jack Winey leads the team with 81 tackles. Safety Luke Winslow has 42 tackles and a team-high three interceptions along with four pass breakups. Cotton has 40 stops and two picks and linebacker Jaden Martinez has made 32 tackles in just six games, including 10 last weekend. Defensive ends Nick Lardaro and Max Llewellyn lead the Red Dragons with 4.5 and 4.0 sacks, respectively.

Curt Fitzpatrick was named Cortland's head coach in February 2020 and enters the game with a 28-4 (.875) overall record with the Red Dragons. In his two-plus seasons on the field, after the 2020 season was canceled, he's led the Red Dragons to three Empire 8 titles. In 2021, he guided the Red Dragons to an 11-1 season, the Empire 8 crown (6-0 record), and the NCAA second round. In 2022, Cortland finished 9-2 (6-0 in league play) and the NCAA first round, and the Red Dragons were perfect in the league (6-0) again this fall. Fitzpatrick and his assistants were named the Empire 8 Coaching Staff of the Year in both 2021 and 2022.

Fitzpatrick previously served as head coach at Morrisville for seven seasons from 2013-19 and guided the Mustangs to four winning seasons and three postseason ECAC bowl games. He served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Utica College from 2008-12. A 2004 graduate of St. John Fisher, Fitzpatrick was a four-year letterman and a standout quarterback for the Cardinals who served as a team captain. In his final season, he earned Empire 8 all-conference honors and set school passing records in touchdowns (30) and yards (2,366) while leading the program to a 10-2 overall record and an NCAA Sweet 16 appearance. He returned to his hometown of Fulton, N.Y., to coach quarterbacks and wide receivers at Fulton High School in 2005 and he served as quarterbacks coach at St. John Fisher for two seasons from 2006-07. During those two years the Cardinals went a combined 23-4, won two Empire 8 crowns, and advanced to the NCAA semifinals (2006) and quarterfinals (2007).

A LOOK AT...ITHACA COLLEGE:  Ithaca won the Liberty League title for the second straight year with a 6-0 record; the Bombers' lone loss of the year came at nationally ranked Centennial Conference champion Johns Hopkins, 27-17, on Sept. 2.

A.J. Wingfield began the season as Ithaca's starting quarterback but hasn't played since suffering an injury late in the game versus Union on Oct. 14. In six games he completed 89-of-154 passes (57.8 percent) for 927 yards and seven touchdowns and rushed for 229 yards and two scores. Freshman Colin Schumm has taken over the starting signalcalling duties and is 40-of-67 for 492 yards and three touchdowns on the season. Jalen Leonard-Osbourne averages 89.3 rushing yards per game with eight scores in addition to 31 receptions for 303 yards and two touchdowns. Sam Kline has caught 40 passes for 583 yards and four touchdowns.

Ben Stola paces the Ithaca defense with 85 tackles, including 10 for loss, and Jake Connolly has registered 67 tackles and two forced fumbles. Derek Slywka leads the team with five interceptions, followed by Cam Paquette with three and Stola and Connolly with two apiece. Kicker Derek Baldin has made 29-of-32 PAT kicks and 10-of-14 field goals, with a long of 45 yards. Darren Brunner averages 39.5 yards per punt.

Michael Toerper (pronounced Ter-per) is in his second season as Ithaca's head coach. In his first season at the helm last fall, Toerper guided the Bombers to a 12-1 record and the Liberty League title. Ithaca won two NCAA playoff games to advance to the national quarterfinals. He was named AFCA Region 1 and D3football.com Region 2 Coach of the Year, and his staff was named the Liberty League Coaching Staff of the Year.

Toerper previously served as the Bombers' defensive coordinator for three seasons from 2017-19 before becoming the safeties coach at Division I Holy Cross for two seasons. He also was an assistant coach for seven years at Johns Hopkins University from 2010-16 and served one season as an assistant at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. A 2008 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, Toerper played three seasons as a defensive back and special teams contributor for the Panthers, earning a scholarship after joining the team as a walk-on.

NOTEBOOK:

* Cortland enters the game ranked sixth nationally in Division III in both total offense (529.2 yards/game) and scoring (51.3 points/game) and 10th in rushing offense (249.6 yards/game). Ithaca is 16th nationally in scoring defense, allowing just 12 points per contest. Cortland has scored at least 35 points in each of its first nine games. The Red Dragons' 51.3 points per game scoring average puts them on pace to break the school single-season record of 45.1 points per game, set last season. Cortland's second-best season was 41.4 points per game in 2021.

* Zac Boyes is currently tied for second at Cortland with 57 career touchdown passes and ranks seventh with 5,329 career passing yards. The school records in those categories are 59 TD passes and 6,518 passing yards by Brett Segala from 2016-19. Boyes' five touchdowns passes versus Susquehanna on Sept. 16 tied a school single-game record set by four other players. The most recent to do so prior to Boyes was Dan Pitcher at Brockport in 2011.

* Zac Boyes has thrown a school-record 181 straight passes without an interception; his lone interception this year came early in the second quarter in the season opener versus Delaware Valley.

* Linebacker Jack Winey has recorded 15 or more tackles three times this year - 18 versus Susquehanna, 16 at St. John Fisher and 15 versus Utica. The last Cortland player to accomplish that feat was Tony Zawadzki in 1984.

* Cortland has not punted in three games this year (Delaware Valley, St. John Fisher, Hartwick) and only once in three other games (Morrisville, Utica, Alfred). Cortland has punted only 13 times in nine games for the season.

* Ithaca and Cortland have two of the top schedule strengths in Division III this season. Ithaca has the top Division III SOS in the country at .674 and Cortland is eighth at .607. Strength of schedule represents a combination of a team's opponents' winning percentage (two thirds) and its opponents' opponents' winning percentage (one third). SOS is one of five primary criteria used by the NCAA when determining playoff at-large selection and playoff seeding/positioning, along with winning percentage vs. Division III opponents, Division III head-to-head competition, results versus common Division III opponents, and results versus regionally ranked Division III teams.

Ithaca and Cortland are currently ranked second and fourth, respectively, in Region Two. Both teams have already secured NCAA Division III tournament automatic berths by winning conference championships.

* Cortland's schedule this year includes four 2022 NCAA Division III playoff qualifiers - conference champs Delaware Valley (Middle Atlantic Conference), Susquehanna (Centennial Conference; now a Landmark Conference member) and Ithaca (Liberty League), along with Empire 8 foe Utica, which was an at-large selection. This fall, Ithaca (8-1) and Delaware Valley (8-1) have already won their league titles, while Susquehanna (9-0) needs a win Saturday versus Lycoming to win its conference crown.

* JJ Laap and Cole Burgess rank among the school career leaders in career touchdown receptions and receiving yards. The current school charts in those categories:

Career Receiving Touchdowns:
30, John Babin (2010-11, 13-14)
29, JJ Laap (2019, 21-23)
29, Jake Smith (2014-16, 18)
28, Cole Burgess (2018-19, 22-23)

Career Receiving Yards:
2,635, John Babin (2010-11, 13-14)
2,616, JJ Laap (2019, 21-23)
2,569, Jon Mannix (2012-16)
2,515, Jake Smith (2014-16, 18)
2,494, Cole Burgess (2018-19, 22-23)

Laap ranks eighth at Cortland with 137 career receptions and Burgess is ninth with 132 career catches.

* Jaden AlfanoStJohn ranks fourth at Cortland with 2,580 career rushing yards through 29 games. He's the second Red Dragon to reach the 2,000-yard rushing mark in his junior season. Dave Cook's career-record 3,455 rushing yards from 1981-84 included 2,302 yards through his first three years. AlfanoStJohn has scored 36 touchdowns in his career (34 rushing, two receiving), and his 216 career points are third in school history. The only other two players to score at least 200 career points at Cortland are Cook (268) and Omar Darling (222 from 1994-95, 97-98).

* Zac Boyes recorded a single-game pass efficiency rating of 357.9 versus Susquehanna (11-of-17, 397 yards, five touchdowns, no interceptions) in September, breaking his own school single-game record (minimum 10 attempts) of 330.3 he accomplished last year against TCNJ. The rating reflects four statistics – completion percentage, passing yards per pass attempt, touchdown passes per pass attempt and interceptions per pass attempt. Through nine games, Boyes has a season rating of 217.9; he set the school record last year with his seasonal mark of 194.2.

* Of Patrick Luby's 74 kickoffs this season, 43 of them (58.1 percent) have resulted in touchbacks. Last season, Luby registered 36 touchbacks among his 77 kickoffs - the 46.7 percent touchback rate was the best by a Cortland kicker since touchback totals were first tracked in 2006.

* Zac Boyes nearly became the second player in school history to pass for 300 yards and rush for 100 yards in the same game with his 294-yard passing/111-yard rushing effort at Morrisville on Sept. 30. The only Red Dragon to accomplish that feat is J.J. Tutwiler, who passed for 338 yards and ran for 118 yards at home versus The College of New Jersey in 2002.

* Zac Boyes is the son of former Ithaca two-time All-America quarterback and Hall of Famer Jerry Boyes '76, who ran for 21 touchdowns for the Bombers from 1973-75.

* Cortland is 6-5 all-time in overtime games, with the last a 32-26 home loss to Brockport in 2019. All 11 games were decided in the first extra session.

* Cortland has been a member of the Empire 8 conference since 2015. The Red Dragons have won the outright league title and the league's NCAA automatic bid in 2021, 2022 and 2023, and were co-champions in both 2015 and 2019, earning an NCAA bid in 2015. Cortland also finished second or tied for second in the league in 2017 and 2018. Cortland previously competed in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) for 15 seasons from 2000-14 and finished in at least a tie for first place six times.

Three current Empire 8 members - Cortland, Brockport and Morrisville - at one point played in the NJAC and are affiliate members of the E8 in football only. The other league teams - Alfred University, Hartwick, St. John Fisher and Utica - are full conference members, while Brockport will become a full member in the fall of 2024. Also in 2024, Hilbert College will join the Empire 8 as an affiliate football member, and it was announced on Oct. 10 that Alfred State College will join the league as an affiliate football member in 2025.
