WEBSTER, NY – Alfred University won five of the six events to expand its lead after day three of the 2023 Empire 8 Men’s Swimming and Diving Championship, held in conjunction with the Allegheny Empire Championships at the Webster Aquatic Center on Friday, February 17.
The Saxons have 614.5 team points to hold an 90.5 point lead over Hartwick College, who has 524 points after Friday night. Nazareth College is third with 371 points, Utica University is fourth overall with 106.5 points, while Medaille University is fifth.
Alfred's Will Lamastus won a pair of Empire 8 events on Friday. He was the E8 champ in the 400-yard individual medley to start the evening in a time of 4:13.68 and annexed the 100-yard backstroke in 51.29 seconds.
Colby Watkins of Alfred earned the victory in the 100-fly for the second straight season with a time of 50.62 seconds, while teammate Colin Schultz took the 100-yard breaststroke in 58.77 seconds.
Lamastus, Schultz, Watkins and Alessandro Lagos closed out the evening by winning the 400-yard medley relay in a time of 3:26.80.
Hartwick's Dawson Tupponce took the 200-yard freestyle for the second straight season in 1:43.83.
Nazareth’s Tom Griffin repeated as 100-yard backstroke winner in a time of 52.31 seconds, while Wade Lamastus of Alfred broke one-minute in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 59.45 seconds.
Day four action begins with the prelims at 10 am on Saturday. Action concludes with the finals events at 5 pm.
