WEBSTER, NY – Alfred University won its first league title since 2009, as the 2023 Empire 8 Men’s Swimming and Diving Championship, held in conjunction with the Allegheny Empire Championships at the Webster Aquatic Center came to a close on Saturday, February 18.
The Saxons finished with 967.5 team points to earn their sixth Empire 8 Championship in program history. Alfred held off runner-up Hartwick College by just under 200 points, as the Hawks finished with 786 points. Nazareth College placed third with 528.5 points, whil Utica University finished fourth and E8 newcomer Medaille University finished fifth.
Hartwick’s Mikey Schultz, earned his second straight Empire 8 Swimmer of the Meet honor. Tonight, he took the 200-yard butterfly for the second straight season in 1:51.00. Schultz's teammate Jack Armstrong won the Empire 8 title in the 1-meter diving event with a score of 454.20. His performance over the week earned him Empire 8 DIver of the Meet honors.
Nick Canney of Hartwick opened the evening by winning the 1,650-freestyle in a time of 16:47.68.
Nazareth's Ryan Hough took the 100-yard freestyle for the second straight year in a snappy time of 46.43 seconds.
Phil Volaski of Alfred earned the victory in the 200-yard backstroke for the second straight season with a time of 1:53.51 seconds, while teammate Colin Schultz won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:08.13
Alfred's 400-yard freestyle relay of Fernando Lagos, Alessandro Lagos, Paul Tuttle, Colby Watkins ended the meet in style to secure the title for the Saxons, winning the E8 crown in a time of 3:10.96
