Hartwick College junior Mikey Schultz earned his second straight Swimmer of the Year honor, as the Empire 8 Conference announced its 2022-23 Men’s Swimming & Diving All-Conference awards on Thursday, March 16. The awards are voted on by the league's head coaches.
Schultz was named the Empire 8 Swimmer of the Championship Meet, held in conjunction with the Allegheny Empire Championships from Webster Aquatic Center from February 15-18 for the second consecutive season. week. He won both the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:53.63 and took the 200-yard butterfly, hitting the wall first in a time of 1:51.00. Schultz was also second in the 100-yard butterfly and helped Hartwick to second place finishes in the 200-yard medley relay and 800-yard freestyle relay, in addition to third place finishes in the 400-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays.
Schultz is the first back-to-back Empire 8 Swimmer of the Year since Matt Baker of Alfred University in 2008 and 2009. He is the sixth swimmer to be named a two-time E8 Swimmer of the Year.
Hartwick junior Jack Armstrong garnered 2022-23 Empire 8 Diver of the Year accolades. Last month, Armstrong won the E8 Championship in the 3-meter diving event with a score of 428.85. He completed the E8 sweep in the 1-meter event, recording an impressive score of 454.20. He was also named the E8 Diver of the Champioinship meet.
Hartwick’s Nicholas Tirrell and Alfred’s Ryan Way shared 2022-23 Empire 8 Rookie of the Year honors. Tirell placed fourth in the 500-yard freestyle, fifth in the 200-yard freestyle and fifth in the 200-yard butterfly and was part of the 800-yard freestyle relay that placed second at the 2023 Empire 8 Championships. Way was third overall for Alfred in the 3-meter diving (318.45) and second in the 1-meter diving (357.80) events at the 2023 E8 Championships, helping Alfred earn its first league championship since 2008-09.
The Alfred University coaching staff, led by head coach Brian Striker, garnered its second straight Empire 8 Coaching Staff of the Year honor. Striker and his staff led the Saxons the 2022-23 Empire 8 Championship, while 10 student-athletes earned All-Empire 8 honors. It is Striker and Alfred’s seventh E8 fifth Coaching Staff of the Year honor.
One member of each team was named that institution's representative on the 2022-23 Men's Swimming & Diving Sportsman of the Year Team. The Empire 8 Conference emphasizes that "Competing with Honor and Integrity" is an essential component of a student-athlete's experience in conjunction with an institution's educational mission. These honorees have distinguished themselves and consistently exhibit the critical traits as outstanding sportsmen.
To be named an E8 All-Conference selection, a student athlete must have finished in the top two of an event at the Conference's Championship Meet, which was held February 15-18 from the Webster Aquatic Center. Winners of the event are named to the First Team, while the Second Team is comprised of the runner-up from each event.
