ROCHESTER, NY – The St. John Fisher University women's lacrosse team took on local rival, Nazareth College, in the women's lacrosse version of the Battle of the Beaks Saturday. The Cardinals jumped ahead in early in the game and cruised to a 17-7 victory. The no. 23 ranked St. John Fisher now hold a 9-2 record and 3-0 in conference play, while the Golden Flyers fall to 7-6 overall and 4-1 in Empire 8 competition.
The Cardinals came out of the gate on fire, scoring eight goals in the opening quarter. Sydney Carpenter kicked it off three minutes in and a couple minutes later, Kaley Griffin converted a free-position shot before Mary Fiorentino put the team ahead 3-0. Nazareth knocked in their first goal with 8:14 to play, but Mykenzie Black answered with a man-up score to go in front 4-1. A minute later Hannah Kumpf got on the score sheet with a free-position shot. As the final few minutes wound down, Black, Kump and Farrah Zalla all scored goals and gave the Cardinals an 8-1 advantage. Fisher was held scoreless in the second frame and went into half time with an 8-4 lead.
Coming out of the break, the Cardinals once again were hot immediately. Kumpf, Courtney O'Dea and Kaley Griffin all found the back of the net in a two-minute span to push the team in front 11-4. With 9:07 to play, Carpenter records another goal off an assist by O'Dea. After a Golden Flyers goal half way through the quarter, Carpenter tallies back-to-back goals in a minute and give Fisher the 14-5 lead entering the final quarter. Fisher scored three goals to end the game, with Carpenter, Fiorentino and Cara Landry securing the 17-7 win.
Carpenter impressed with five goals on seven shots, while adding two assists for a total of nine points. Fiorentino and O'Dea each contributed four points of their own. Fiorentino recorded two goals and two assists, while O'Dea finished with one goal and three assists. Kumpf tallied three goals Black and Griffin each had a pair of goals and Landry and Zalla both finish with one goal.
Lilly Goodsell earns another win, tallying seven saves in her 60 minutes of action.
The Cardinals are in action on Wednesday, April 19, as they welcome Keuka College to town. The Empire 8 contest is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
