ROCHESTER, NY – Seniors Kate Metzler (5G, 2A) and Maggie Vay (4G, 1A) combined for half of Nazareth's goals on Saturday, as the Golden Flyers defeated Hartwick 18-9 on Senior Day. The Golden Flyers outscored Hartwick 12-4 in the second half to run away with the important conference win. In addition, Nazareth got a strong showing in net from freshman Allie Klestinec, who delivered a career-high 19 saves.
With the victory, Nazareth moves to 8-6 overall and 5-1 in Empire 8 play, while Hartwick drops to 10-3 and 4-2, respectively.
The Golden Flyers, who have qualified for the Empire 8 postseason, travel to St. Lawrence on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. non-conference matchup. They will close out the conference season on Saturday, traveling to Sage for a 4 p.m. start.
Nine goals were scored in the first quarter as Nazareth trailed 5-4 behind two goals from Vay and Metzler.
In the second quarter, Nazareth held Hartwick off the scoreboard and added a pair of goals from Emily Paddock and Reva Mussi to take a 6-5 advantage into half.
After Hartwick tied the game at seven apiece, the tides changed, with Nazareth scoring the next eight goals of the quarter to seize control of the contest at 14-6.
Hartwick scored the first goal of the fourth to come within seven goals, but that was as close as it would come the rest of the game. Nazareth outscored the Hawks 4-3 in the final frame.
Emma States scored her lone goal of the game in the third quarter and added three assists.
Reva Mussi added a goal and two assists with Annie Rubel and Emily Paddock each chipped in two goals. Grace Seither and Maren Wallace also scored for Naz.
