ALFRED, NY – For the first time since the 2018 season, the Alfred University men's lacrosse team defeated Nazareth College following a 13-11 victory on Friday evening from Yunevich Stadium. The Saxons (7-3, 3-0 Empire 8) picked up 33 ground balls in the win, while the Golden Flyers (6-7, 2-1 Empire 8) turned the ball over on 19 occasions.

Alfred University was led by the efforts of Paul Forte (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena), who totaled four points from three goals and one assist. Josh Hauman (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) totaled three goals across four shots. Scott Kimiecik (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) picked up nine saves in the win for AU. Hunter Cupp (Bath, NY/Haverling) finished the game with eight ground balls to become 10th all-time in program history for ground balls in a single season.

"I am so happy that the seniors were able to bounce back and get it done today," Head Coach Jason Lockner said. "That one was for the team, the parents who support us, and of course the alumni. It was truly and the seniors and the captains. That made a big different in this game today. I'm very proud of them."

The Saxons set the tone early in the opening quarter, with an assist from Dawson Felenchak (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) to Hauman reaching the back of the net for the Saxons. Under a minute later, Drew Cartwright (Elmira, NY/Elmira) scored his first goal of the evening. Nazareth scored twice before the end of the first quarter, as the teams were tied 2-2 going into the second quarter. Alfred University opened the second quarter with goals from Justin Mosher (Hilton, NY/Hilton), Connor DiDomineck (Bath, NY/Haverling) and Felenchak to extend their lead. The Golden Flyers responded with two goals of their own, but Hauman found the back of the net twice before halftime, as AU led 7-3 going into the break.

Nazareth opened early in the third quarter, but the Saxons quickly retaliated with a goal from Kevin Matson (Chenango Bridge, NY/Chenango Forks). The Golden Flyers scored again before an assist from Mosher to Forte put the Saxons back on the scoreboard. Nazareth rallied and scored four times, but Alfred University relied on Marcus Darminio (Marcellus, NY/Marcellus) to equalize the score before going into the final quarter with a 10-10 tie. Matson was the first to score for Alfred University for the go-ahead lead with 13 minutes remaining. Four minutes later, a goal from Forte gave AU some breathing room. The Golden Flyers found the back of the net with nine minutes to play, but Forte's third goal of the evening was enough to seal the victory for the Saxons.

"Fisher is a very good team," Lockner said. We are looking forward to another great game. We've got to come focused and ready to go. Paul and our captains have to lead us again."

Alfred University will next host St. John Fisher University on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
