The St. John Fisher men’s lacrosse team won its fourth straight Empire 8 Championship, defeating No. 3 seed Nazareth College, 19-7 at Growney Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals earn the Empire 8’s automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Men’s Lacrosse Championship Tournament, while improving to 10-9 on the season. Nazareth had its season end with a 10-9 record.
The Cardinals will now await word on where and whom they'll face in the opening round of the NCAA Championship. The selection show will air at 9 p.m. on Sunday, May 7 and can be watched by visiting

St. John Fisher broke open a close game by scoring seven straight goals over a 16:08 span during the second and third quarters to take a 14-5 lead. Jacob Gallina scored four consecutive goals during the run for St. John Fisher. The Cardinals would continue to keep pushing eventually ending the game on a 12-2 run.
St. John Fisher out-shot Nazareth, 53-28, won the ground ball battle, 43-30 and won 21-of-30 face-offs on the afternoon.
Seven different Cardinals had at least three points on the day offensively. Timmy Salit led the team with seven points on a goal and six assists. Gallina, the 2023 Empire 8 Tournament Most Valuable Player, led the Cardinals with five goals and added an assist. Matthew Kemmis had three goals and an assist, while Brady Mason and Lane Edinger tallied three goals each. Samuel Miller scored twice and added a helper, while Ethan Kesselring tallied a goal and two assists.
Mason Gasbarre scored a goal and added a team-high two caused turnovers for the Cardinals.
Scott Reeves won 10-of-14 face-offs and recorded nine ground balls, while Logan Grom won 8-of-12 face-offs and had seven ground balls for Fisher.
Matthew Farrington led the Golden Flyers with three points on two goals and an assist, while Braeden McKercher had a goal and an assist to go along with a team-high five ground balls. Eric Almquist made 10 saves.
