THE MATCHUP:
THE SERIES: Cortland and Ithaca are playing for the Cortaca Jug for the 65th time in 2024. The schools actually started playing in 1930 and have met every year since 1948, other than in 2020 when the season was canceled. Ithaca leads the overall series 43-35-3 and the Jug series 38-26. Ithaca's Jug series lead does not include the Bombers' 1988 NCAA playoff win over the Red Dragons.
In 1959, friends and team captains Tom Decker of Cortland and Dick Carmean of Ithaca originated the Cortaca Jug as the prize for the winner of the game between the schools located about 20 miles apart on Route 13. The original jug was purchased at a yard sale. Each year, the game's result is printed on the Jug. The first Jug ran out of room for scores in the mid-1980s, necessitating a second Jug. That Jug ran out of room for scores after the 2015 season and a third Jug was created to list the scores beginning in 2016. In 1991, Sports Illustrated referred to the Cortaca Jug game as "the biggest little game in the nation."
Two of the recent matchups between the teams drew the two largest crowds in Division III history. Ithaca won both of those games - a 32-20 decision at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey in 2019 with a Division III attendance record of 45,161, and a 34-17 win at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx in 2022 with a crowd of 40,232.
Cortland has won two of the last three meetings - a 28-27 victory at home in 2021 and a 38-28 win at Ithaca last fall. In last season's game, Zac Boyes completed 24-of-32 passes for 289 yards and two touchdowns and ran 15 times for 125 yards, including two crucial fourth-quarter rushes. Jaden AlfanoStJohn ran 29 times for 91 yards and two scores and Ashton Capone and Joe Iadevaio each scored touchdowns. Mike Baloga helped seal the win with a 29-yard field goal with 2:11 left. Jaden Martinez finished with 10 tackles. Ithaca's Colin Schumm was 18-of-26 passing for 224 yards and a TD and he ran for a score. Jalen Leonard-Osbourn ran for 57 yards and a TD and caught five passes for 65 yards and a TD. Ben Stola led the Bombers with 17 tackles and an interception.
Ithaca won three straight games in the series from 2017-19 and Cortland won seven straight from 2010-16, including matchups in 2015 and 2016 when both schools were members of the Empire 8. Ithaca joined the Liberty League in 2017. Cortland was a member of the New Jersey Athletic Conference from 2000-14 and an independent before that. Cortland clinched the 2015 Empire 8 title with an 11-8 win at Ithaca.
In 2014, Cortland won at home over the Bombers, 23-20, in one of the most wild and memorable finishes in the rivalry's history. The Red Dragons trailed 20-17 and were lining up for a potential game-tying field goal with no timeouts left and the clock winding down. Holder Luke Hinton was late getting on the field, and he was actually looking back at the kicker when a low snap hit him in the leg. Hinton recovered, rolled to his left and threw the game-winning TD pass to Jon Mannix as time expired. The play was recognized as the nation's number-3 play on ESPN's SportsCenter Top 10 that evening.
Of the last 26 games in the series (1997-2023), 17 have been decided by eight points or less. In the previous 64 Cortaca Jug games, Cortland is 8-5 in games decided by 1-3 points and 11-7 in games decided by 4-8 points, but Ithaca is 9-4 when the margin is 9-16 points and 17-3 when a team wins by 17 or more.
CORTLAND CAPSULE: Mike Baloga made a 38-yard field goal with 27 seconds left to give Cortland its only lead of the game and the Red Dragons won at Brockport, 29-28, to clinch their fourth straight Empire 8 title and an NCAA Division III tournament automatic berth. Baloga made three field goals in four tries and both of his PAT kicks.
Zac Boyes completed 33-of-52 passes for 414 yards and two touchdowns. He was intercepted in the second quarter, ending his streak of pass attempts without a pick at 291. Sam Cotton, in his first game of the season returning from a preseason injury, caught 10 passes for 140 yards and a score. Cotton made the move to receiver this year after earning Empire 8 Rookie of the Year honors as a safety last fall. Jayson Zeva caught nine passes for 121 yards and a score and Ethan Gallo ran 18 times for 102 yards and a TD. Nazair Jean-Lubin intercepted two passes, including one inside the 15-yard line in the closing seconds to preserve the win. Jaden Martinez finished with 12 tackles and a pass breakup, Ellis Einbinder had eight tackles and Nick Lardaro recorded six tackles, including a sack.
Boyes is 163-of-227 passing (71.8 percent) this fall for 2,440 yards and 24 touchdowns with one interception. Gallo averages 95.8 rushing yards per game and has scored 19 touchdowns. Jaden AlfanoStJohn has caught 44 passes for 876 yards and 11 scores and Zeva has 45 catches for 582 yards and five touchdowns. Martinez and Jack Winey lead the Red Dragons with 66 and 60 tackles, respectively, while Jean-Lubin and Einbinder each have three interceptions. Baloga is 7-of-8 on field goal attempts and 57-of-59 on PAT kicks, and he averages 39.5 yards on 17 punts.
Curt Fitzpatrick was named SUNY Cortland's football head coach in February 2020 and is in his fifth year at the school and fourth season on the field in 2024. His record at Cortland is 43-4 (.915), highlighted by a 14-1 season and a storybook run to the 2023 NCAA Division III title. Fitzpatrick was named both the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and the D3football.com Division III National Coach of the Year, and the AFCA Region 1 and D3football.com Region 2 Coach of the Year. Fitzpatrick has led Cortland to four Empire 8 titles from 2021-24, each with an undefeated record. He and his assistants were named the Empire 8 Coaching Staff of the Year in each of those three seasons.
Fitzpatrick previously served as head coach at Morrisville for seven seasons from 2013-19 and guided the Mustangs to four winning seasons and three postseason ECAC bowl games. He served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Utica College from 2008-12. A 2004 graduate of St. John Fisher, Fitzpatrick was a four-year letterman and a standout quarterback for the Cardinals who served as a team captain. In his final season, he earned Empire 8 all-conference honors and set school passing records in touchdowns (30) and yards (2,366) while leading the program to a 10-2 overall record and an NCAA Sweet 16 appearance. He returned to his hometown of Fulton, N.Y., to coach quarterbacks and wide receivers at Fulton High School in 2005 and he served as quarterbacks coach at St. John Fisher for two seasons from 2006-07. During those two years the Cardinals went a combined 23-4, won two Empire 8 crowns, and advanced to the NCAA semifinals (2006) and quarterfinals (2007).
A LOOK AT...ITHACA COLLEGE: Ithaca recorded its second straight shutout and won for the fifth straight time with a 41-0 home win over St. Lawrence last Saturday. The Bombers are now 6-3 overall and wrapped up Liberty League play with a 5-1 record, second behind Hobart. Ithaca's losses have come to Hobart (16-7) and nationally ranked Johns Hopkins (27-23) and Endicott (13-7).
Matthew Parker connected on 16-of-20 passes versus the Saints for 264 yards and three TDs. Jake Williams ran for 64 yards and a score and Jalen Leonard-Osbourne rushed for 56 yards and a TD. Sam Kline, Nicholas Matos and Nicholas Lang each caught TD passes. Jake Connolly paced the defense with 10 tackles and a pass breakup.
Parker, in eight games, has completed 110-of-153 passes (71.9 percent) for 1,383 yards and 10 touchdowns with four interceptions. Lang has 38 receptions for 497 yards and six scores and Matos has caught 25 passes for 335 yards and three TDs. Leonard-Osbourne is the team's leading rusher with 741 yards and eight touchdowns in nine games. Connolly leads the team this season with 73 tackles, followed by Ryan Burns with 53 and Darren Brunner with 51. Joe Spirra has intercepted four passes and Owen O'Neill and Carson Ciancuielli each have 2.5 sacks. Derek Baldin had made 8-of-9 field goals, including a 50-yarder against Union and a 48-yarder last weekend. He's also 28-of-31 on PAT kicks. Williams is the team's starting punter and averages 37.5 yards on 17 kicks.
Michael Toerper (pronounced Ter-per) is in his third season as Ithaca's head coach and has an overall record of 27-7 (.794). In his first season at the helm in 2022, Toerper guided the Bombers to a 12-1 record and the Liberty League title. Ithaca won two NCAA playoff games to advance to the national quarterfinals. He was named AFCA Region 1 and D3football.com Region 2 Coach of the Year, and his staff was named the Liberty League Coaching Staff of the Year. Last fall, the Bombers finished 9-3, won the Liberty League crown and advanced to the NCAA second round.
Toerper previously served as the Bombers' defensive coordinator for three seasons from 2017-19 before becoming the safeties coach at Division I Holy Cross for two seasons. He also was an assistant coach for seven years at Johns Hopkins University from 2010-16 and served one season as an assistant at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. A 2008 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, Toerper played three seasons as a defensive back and special teams contributor for the Panthers, earning a scholarship after joining the team as a walk-on.
NOTEBOOK:
* Cortland is 9-0 for the fifth time in school history. In two of those previous four instances the Red Dragons completed the perfect regular seasons. The Red Dragons went 10-0 in the regular season and 11-1 overall in both 1988 and 2021. In 2008 and 2022, Cortland lost to Ithaca to close the regular season 9-1. The 2008 team advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals and finished 11-2 and the 2022 squad lost in the NCAA first round and ended 9-2.
* Cortland's current 21-game winning streak is the longest active streak by teams on any NCAA football level. The next-longest streaks are 13 by Army West Point (Division I FBS), and 12 each by Hope (Division III) and St. John's (Minn.) (Division III). Cortland's 26-game Empire 8 win streak, dating back to 2019, is currently the fourth-longest on any NCAA level behind three other Division III schools - Mount Union (66), Aurora (47) and North Central (41).
* The last time the Cortaca Jug game featured a defending national champion was in 1992. That season, Ithaca, coming off the 1991 national title, brought an 8-0 record and a 17-game winning streak into Carl "Chugger" Davis Field to face the 5-3 Red Dragons. Cortland stunned the Bombers, 22-20, after breaking up a potential game-tying 2-point conversion pass with 13 seconds remaining. Read a recap about that game here (written in 2019 as part of a Cortland Cortaca Jug Flashback series).
* Cortland is fifth nationally in the Division III NCAA Power Index (NPI) through games of Nov. 9, moving up two spots from the previous week. The NPI is new in 2024 and is what will be used to determine which teams earn at-large berths into the NCAA playoff field. The NCAA Division III tournament has expanded this year from 28 to 40 teams. Of those 40 teams, 28 will be automatic qualifiers by winning league championships and 12 will be at-large bids based on NPI rating. Sixteen teams will play in the first round Nov. 23, while 24 schools will earn byes into the second round on Nov. 30.
The NPI is a combination of winning percentage and strength of schedule, with bonus points awarded for wins versus teams above a certain threshold. In addition, teams keep a minimum of five wins on their resume, with others dropped unless they improve a team's average score. All losses must be included in the score. The NPI ratings will assist the NCAA committee with tournament seeding, with adjustments made due to geography to limit trips of more than 500 miles. The top eight teams in the final NPI rankings will be "protected" from being lined up to face other top-8 teams until the national quarterfinals.
* Cortland's 21-game winning streak is a school record for longest unbeaten streak. Cortland went 17 straight games without a loss between 1932-34. Cortland was 11-0-6 during that stretch, going 4-0-3 in 1932, 5-0-2 in 1933 and 2-0-1 in its first three games of 1934 before losing to Ithaca, 7-0.
* Cortland is 6-5 all-time in overtime games, with the last a 32-26 home loss to Brockport in 2019. All 11 games were decided in the first extra session. Cortland and Ithaca have played two overtime games, with Cortland coming out on top both times - 37-30 at Ithaca in 2005 on a 8-yard TD pass from Alex Smith to Anthony Morat and 23-20 in Cortland in 2006 on a Matthew Mintz 40-yard field goal. Cortland's defense recorded interceptions in each of those overtimes with Stef Sair sealing the 2005 win and Bill Hauser picking off a pass to open the OT in 2006.
* Cortland has broken the school record for scoring average each of the last three years, averaging 41.4 points per game in 2021, 45.1 points per contest in 2022 and 46.2 points per game last fall. The Red Dragons are averaging 53.0 points per game this fall, including 59 or more four times and at least 40 eight times. Last week's 29-point effort at Brockport was the season low for the Red Dragons. Cortland ranks fourth nationally in scoring offense behind North Central (58.8), UMass Dartmouth (55.0) and DePauw (54.0).
* Zac Boyes had his streak of consecutive pass attempts without an interception end at 291 when he was picked off in the second quarter at Brockport. His streak had covered the entire season to that point, along with his last 103 attempts in 2023. Last season, Boyes set a then-school record of 194 straight pass attempts without an interception - he was picked in the season opener versus Delaware Valley that season and wasn't intercepted again until throwing two picks at Ithaca (and later two versus Grove City in the NCAA second round).
* Zac Boyes has a 196.1 passing efficiency rating through nine games this season. He owns the two best single-season passing ratings in school history with a 198.4 last year and a 194.2 in 2022. NCAA passing efficiency rating is a reflection of completion percentage, yards per pass attempt, TD passes per pass attempt, and interceptions per pass attempt.
* Ethan Gallo ranks second nationally in Division III with 19 rushing touchdowns, one shy of the 20 by Lake Forest's A.J. Jackson. Gallo's 19 rushing scores are the second-best for a season in school history, trailing only Andrew Giuliano who rank for 22 touchdowns in 2008.
* Zac Boyes is the son of former Ithaca two-time All-America quarterback and Hall of Famer Jerry Boyes '76, who ran for 21 touchdowns for the Bombers from 1973-75.
* Cortland has been a member of the Empire 8 conference since 2015. The Red Dragons won the outright league title and NCAA automatic bid in 2021, 2022 and 2023 and were co-champions in both 2015 and 2019, earning an NCAA bid in 2015. Cortland also finished second or tied for second in the league in 2017 and 2018. Cortland previously competed in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) for 15 seasons from 2000-14 and finished in at least a tie for first place six times.
Three current Empire 8 members - Cortland, Morrisville and Brockport - at one point played in the NJAC. Cortland and Morrisville are affiliate members of the E8 in football only. Brockport moved from affiliate to full-time status in the league in 2024. Alfred, Hartwick, St. John Fisher and Utica also are full conference members. Hilbert joined the Empire 8 as an affiliate football member in 2024 but will be moving to the Liberty League in 2025, and Alfred State will join the league as an affiliate football member in 2025.
