SUNY Morrisville wins Mustang battle for "Scotty" Whitelaw Bowl Title

MORRISVILLE, NY – Host SUNY Morrisville football captured their second bowl title in program history Saturday afternoon as they defeated the visiting Stevenson University Mustangs by a 21-18 final in the ECAC Division III Robert M. "Scotty" Whitelaw Bowl game held in Morrisville.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
  • For the second time in program history, the SUNY Morrisville football team claimed a post-season bowl title on Drake Field, defeating visiting Stevenson University by a 21-18 final score in the ECAC Division III Robert M. "Scotty" Whitelaw Bowl game in Morrisville.
  • The win comes 10 years after the Mustangs first bowl victory and on the heels of the Wall of Fame Induction by the 2014 team earlier this fall.
  • The defensive battle across the afternoon was won by Morrisville in the battle of the Mustangs, as the hosts 270 yards total offense to Stevenson's 207.
  • Morrisville had 167 yards through the air with time split between Christopher Stancarone (Levittown, N.Y.) and Logan Watson (Lowville, N.Y.).
  • Stancarone completed all five pass attempts for 91 yards on the day, throwing one touchdown score, adding a net 29 yards on three rushing attempts.
  • Watson went 8-for-16 for 76 yards, hitting a combination of wide receivers for the Mustangs throughout the afternoon.
  • Alex McBurnie (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had a team high 52 yards on one reception, while Connor Marriott (Waterville, N.Y.) reining in three for 37 yards.
  • Quamel Jarvis (Rochester, N.Y.) added three catches as well for 30 yards and a touchdown, while Joey Chirurgi (Yonkers, N.Y.) caught four for 29 yards.
  • Aidan McDonald (Rochester, N.Y.) also pulled in two for 19 yards on the afternoon.
  • David Kelley (Macedon, N.Y.) led the defensive unit that limited the Stevenson offensive gameDavid Kelley, MVP with his 10 tackle effort, posting three and a half tackles for a loss for 18 yards, including a sack and half for a loss of 12.
  • Kelley also forced a fumble and had a quarterback hurry on the day to earn the game's Most Valuable Player award come final whistle.
  • Camerin Camacho (Cape Coral, Fla.) added eight tackles to the Mustangs defensive efforts, with Evan Salvaggio (Geneseo, N.Y.) posting seven, two tackles for a loss of two yards.
  • Salvaggio also intercepted one for 14 returned yards.
  • Stevenson was limited to just 40 net yards in the rushing game, with Edward Emmens registering a team high 32 on 15 carries.
  • Kirk Reed added 20 on 11 attempts.
  • Nyaire Wilson generated 120 yards through the air for the visiting Mustangs, completing 10-of-19 passes for a touchdown, before Jordan Adams added a 2-for-3 effort for 31 yards.
  • Landon Winterbottom posted nine yards on 1-of-2 completions.
  • Ryan McClain served as the main target for Stevenson on the day, turning in 49 yards on three catches with fellow wideout Dillon Johnson collecting the receiving touchdown as he posted a total 38 yards on four receptions.
  • Gavin Shields had a monster game for Stevenson, recording 14 total tackles, 1.5 for a loss of 15 yards and a sack for a loss of 13.
  • Shields also had an interception.
  • Clarence Travis had nine tackles in the efforts, adding 1.5 tackles for a loss of a yard with Gabriel Shanks adding eight stops, two sacks for a loss of 15 yards.
  • Morrisville's defense set the tone early, forcing Stevenson to a three-and-out on their game opening possession, before marching downfield on their first drive of the afternoon, putting the first points on the board just under five minutes in.
  • Stancarone hit a wide open McBurnie over center on the 52-yard pass play, before the senior running back was caught by the heels two-yards short of the end zone.
  • On the ensuing play, Stancarone had the short lob over the middle to Jarvis, who was wide open in the back of the end zone for the host lead, completing the 75-yard drive in five plays.
  • Morrisville added to their lead with 2:57 to go in the opening quarter, after drawing Stevenson offside on the fourth down.
  • Sylvain got a block behind the center of the line to pound forward for the rushing score, capping off the 70-yard drive with the 13-yard touchdown run and 14-0 host lead.
  • Midway through the second, a series of penalties against Morrisville saw Stevenson reach the red zone, but a goal line stand by the hosts forced the visitors to settle for a 23-yard field goal by Donnie Waitt, sending the game into the halftime break with a 14-3 Morrisville lead.
  • Deferring to the second half on the coin toss, Morrisville's Omar Jarvis (Rochester, N.Y.) received the kick-off and returned the ball 83-yards for the touchdown, increasing the lead to 21-3 in the first 10 seconds of the third quarter.
  • On the ensuing possession, Stevenson attempted to move the ball downfield, but Reed was stripped after the catch by Chad McBurnie (Brooklyn, N.Y.) at the Mustangs 32, recovering the fumble and returning the ball to the hosts.
  • Morrisville attempted to put additional points on the board with the leg of Owen Cole (Maspeth, N.Y.) but the slight wind carried the ball just wide of the left upright.
  • Stevenson put their first touchdown on the board at the 4:50 mark of the third, as Wilson connected with Johnson for the short five-yard scoring pass to the right, cutting into the Morrisville lead to make it a 21-10 ball game.
  • Morrisville threatened to score on their following possession, but Watson was intercepted by Amari Fleming-Powell on the Stevenson five-yard line to prevent the score.
  • Stevenson cut the lead to just three early in the fourth quarter, carrying over the drive that started at the end of the third.
  • Emmens carried the ball down to the one, falling inches shy of the goal line, before Adams posted the rushing score as he followed the center across the line for the touchdown.
  • Richardson pulled in the pass from Adams for the successful two-point conversion, cutting the Morrisville lead to just three with 11:07 to go.
  • Stevenson was forced to punt the ball away on their following possession, and after Morrisville ate up nearly five minutes of the clock regained the ball on their own six with 1:32 to go in the game.
  • Facing third and one, Stevenson attempted to use their backfield to move the ball forward, but for a third time on the day, the Mustang defense forced the turnover as Aaron Greaves (Goshen, N.Y.) punched the ball free from Emmens grip, falling to the feet of Dashon Constantine (Rochester, N.Y.) who recovered the loose ball for Morrisville.
  • Stancarone returned to under center for the final two plays of the game, kneeling down to run out the clock as Morrisville captured the bowl championship title.
