ROCHESTER, NY -- The St. John Fisher University men's lacrosse team went down the street to take on cross-town rivals, Nazareth University, in the latest installment of the Battle of the Beaks. The Cardinals (7-6, 3-0 Empire 8) used a big second quarter to establish a 10-2 halftime in an eventual 12-4 victory over the Golden Flyers (8-5, 2-1 Empire 8).
In the first quarter, Fisher scored first with Braeden McNeill and Keaton Piconi getting the team in front, 2-0. Ethan Kesselring added the third goal of the quarter, and after a score by the Golden Flyers, the Cardinals led 3-2 after one. In the second quarter, Fisher outscored Naz 7-0 to go into halftime ahead 10-2. Jordan Leuze led the way with a hat-trick, while Kemmis added a brace and both Sean Donaldson and McNeill contributed one each.
The game settled down in the second-half, with the score being even at 2-2. Kemmis completed his hat trick in the third and Reed Currie ended the scoring in the fourth quarter, completing the 12-4 victory. Along with his three goals, Kemmis added an assist to lead the team with four points. Ben Hammond earned the win with eight saves and allowing just four goals.
Quinn McKercher, Quinn Conroy, Louis Cogliandro and Andy Hamel scored for Nazareth, while McLean Ralston made 13 saves in net.
St. John Fisher held a commanding 45-20 edge in shots, 41-28 edge in ground balls and won 14-of-18 face-offs. Logan Grom was 11-of-15 at the face-off "X" for the Cardinals.
Up next for Fisher is a home contest against Alfred University on Wednesday, April 17. The contest is slated to begin at 4 p.m.
