ALFRED, NY - The Alfred University men's lacrosse team (9-2, 3-0 Empire 8) picked up a thrilling 11-9 win over Hartwick College (3-7, 1-2 Empire 8) on Senior Day Saturday afternoon.
The Saxons honored nine seniors before the game including; Owen Zimmerman, Kevin Matson, Mike DeSain, Justin Mosher, Andy Davis, Ashton Howlett, Dawson Felenchak, Josh Hauman, and Cameron Kenefick.
Owen Zimmerman (Reamstown, PA/Cocalico) led the Saxons in scoring with four goals. Brendan Riley (Fairport, NY/Fairport) was close behind with three goals. Josh Hauman (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) also tacked on two goals of his own. Andy Davis (Baldwinsville, NY/Baldwinsville) led AU with seven saves in net.
"It was a good win today and happy for our seniors and graduate students who helped get the job done." Head Coach Jason Lockner said. "Hunter Cupp did a great job at face off. Andy Davis did a nice job, especially on the clears. Brendan Riley also stepped up on offense today for us!"
The Saxons set the tone in the first quarter as they were able to build a 4-1 lead and never looked back. Hartwick battled back in the third and fourth quarters, but were never able to tie the game or take the lead from the Saxons. They came within a goal four times within the second half, but every time the Saxons answered with a goal of their own to keep the Hawks at bay. In the end, it was a Zimmerman goal with less than 10 second left on the shot clock and just over one minute to left play that sealed the win for the Saxons.
Alfred University will next play on the road at St. John Fisher University on Wednesday, April 17th at 4:00 PM.
