PITTSFORD, NY – The St. John Fisher University women's lacrosse team were at home on Saturday to compete in an Empire 8 contest against Utica University. The Pioneers entered the game on an impressive 10-game winning streak and 10-2 overall record, but the Cardinals handled their business on both ends of the field to earn the victory, 18-3.
Sydney Carpenter got the scoring started with under ten minutes to play in the first quarter and after Utica tied the game, Emma Biel and Kaley Griffin contributed goals to put the team in front 3-1 going into the second frame. The eruption of goals took place in the second, as the Cardinals recorded eight of them. Hanna Kumpf led the way with three goals, with Carpenter adding a pair of her own. Cara Landry and Ellie Leisen tallied their firsts of the game, while Griffin contributed her second. Going into halftime, Fisher led 11-2.
As the third quarter progressed, the Cardinals quickly grabbed the 10-goal lead and didn't look back. Mary Fiorentino recorded her first goal of the day and it was followed up by another pair of scores by Carpenter. After a Utica goal, Kumpf and Chelsea Lopata pushed the advantage to 16-3 going to the final quarter. The fourth quarter had minimal action, with just two goals going in for Fisher. Griffin added her third of the day and Dharma Makarowsky ended the scoring with her first of the day.
Carpenter led the way with seven points on five goals and two assists. She added six ground balls, four draw controls and two caused turnovers. Maddie Lowney continued her impressive season, tallying seven ground balls, eight draw controls, and six caused turnovers. Kaylee Gadol earned the win in goal, recording four saves and allowing just three goals.
The Cardinals improved to 3-0 in E8 play this season and move into sole possession of the E8 standings lead.
Up next for Fisher is a road contest at Alfred University on Wednesday, April 17. The contest is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start time.
