St. John Fisher Clinches No. 1 Seed for 2024 Empire 8 Women's Lacrosse Tournament On Senior Day

Cardinals clinch at least a share of the E8 Regular Season title and will be the top-seed in the E8 Tournament

PITTSFORD, NY – The St. John Fisher University women's lacrosse team were at home on Saturday to take on Nazareth University in the final home game of the regular season. The Cardinals (7-7, 5-0 Empire 8) rolled to a decisive 19-6 over Nazareth University (6-8, 3-2 Empire 8) to not only claim a post-season spot, but they also secure at least a share of the Empire 8 Regular Season Championship and the top-seed in the upcoming Empire 8 Tournament, starting on May 1.

Prior to the matchup, the Cardinals honored their three seniors, Cara Landry, Ashanti Nelson and Shannon Foster, and thanked them for everything they have done for the program.
 
Fisher quickly took control in this game with Hanna Kumpf scoring the first goal in the opening minutes. After Naz evened the score, Sydney Carpenter and Farrah Zalla recorded goals to push the lead to 3-1. Despite the Golden Flyers scoring two more in the first quarter, points by Zalla, Cara Landry, Carpenter and Kumpf had the Cardinals up 8-3 after one. In the second quarter, the defense stepped up to hold Naz scoreless, while Emma Biel, Chelsea Lopata and Mary Fiorentino all got on the board to put the team ahead 12-3 at the half.
 
Fisher continued to extend their advantage as the second half pushed on. Fiorentino scored two in the third and one in the fourth, while Kumpf tallied her fourth, Landry completed her hat-trick and Ellie Leisen and Dharma Makarowsky scored their first goals of the game. When the final horn went off, the Cardinals earned the 19-6 victory.
 
Kumpf led the way with eight points on four goals and four assists. Carpenter followed with two goals and three assists for a total of five points, while adding 11 draw controls. Landry celebrated senior day with three goals, and Fiorentino ended the day with four of her own.
 
Up next for the Cardinals is a road game at Union College on Friday, April 26. The matchup is slated for a 4 p.m. start time.
