Five Empire 8 Standouts Earn 2024 IWLCA All-Region Team Accolades

All five student-athletes are repeat selections; St. John Fisher's Sydney Carpenter earned her third straight first team accolade

Five student-athletes from three Empire 8 institutions were named to the 2024 Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) All-Empire Region Team. Sydney Carpenter (frst team), Maddie Lowney (first team), Shannon Foster (second team) and Hanna Kumpf (second team) from Empire 8 Champion St. John Fisher University led all E8 members with four selections, while Kristen Vaccarelli from Hartwick College earned All-Region earned honors.
 
Both Carpenter, the Empire 8 Offensive Player of the Year and Lowney, the E8 Defensive Player of the Year were first team selections. Foster, Kumpf and Vaccarelli were second team selections. All five student-athletes are repeat All-Region selections and all five previously earned 2024 All-Empire 8 first team accolades.

A total of 256 student-athletes were selected in the eight regions for 2024. These student-athletes are now eligible to be named to the national IWLCA All-American team that will be released on May 24.

Carpenter, a junior, led the Cardinals in 2024, recording 86 points on 57 goals and 29 assists to go along with aa league-high 125 draw controls and 48 ground balls in 20 games on her way to earning her third consecutive IWLCA All-Empire Region First Team accolade and second Empire 8 Offensive Player of the Year honor. A native of Hilton, NY, Carpenter was also named the 2024 Empire 8 Championship Tournament Most Valuable Player for the third consecutive season after leading the Cardinals to their 12th straight league title. She has career totals of 136 goals, 90 assists, 226 points, 137 ground balls and an Empire 8 record 426 draw controls.

Lowney, the 2024 Empire 8 Defensive Player of the Year, had an incredible second season for the Cardinals in 2024, leading all defenders with 60 ground balls and 38 caused turnovers, to go along with 77 draw controls. A native of Baldwin, MD, Lowney is a key component of the St. John Fisher defensive unit that allowed just 22 goals in eight games against E8 competition in 2024. She was previously named the 2023 E8 Rookie of the Year.

Foster, who was previously the 2021 Empire 8 Rookie of the Year and 2023 Empire 8 Defensive Player of the Year, is along with Lowney, leaders of a St. John Fisher defense that allowed just 22 goals in eight games against Empire 8 competition this season. The Syracuse, NY native has scooped up 41 ground balls and is among the team leaders with 14 caused turnovers.

Kumpf, a native of Victor, NY, enjoyed a strong junior season, tallying 38 goals, 21 assists and 59 points in 19 games played. She added 17 ground balls. Kumpf tallied eight games with at least three goals, including an eight-point effort (four goals and four assists) against Nazareth and seven points versus Endicott (five goals and two assists) in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.

Vaccarelli, a native of Dix Hills, NY, is Hartwick's first two-time All-Region selection. She enjoyed another tremendous season for the Hawks in 2024, leading the team with 58 goals, 60 points, 55, ground balls and 79 draw controls. She finished the season second in the league in goals and goals per game, fifth in points per game,second in ground balls per game and fourth in draw controls per game. In three seasons with the Hawks, Vaccarelli has 160 goals, 187 points, 264 draw controls and 132 ground balls in 43 games.
