SALISBURY, MD - The St. John Fisher University men's lacrosse team saw its historic NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship tournament run come to an end on Saturday, falling to No. 6 Tufts University, 16-6, in the tournament quarterfinals at Salisbury University. St. John Fisher ended the season with a 14-8 mark, while Tufts improves to 16-3 in 2024.
Playing in the program's first-ever Elite Eight, the Cardinals fell behind early to the Jumbos, 3-0, including two goals by Tufts' sophomore midfielder, Jack Regnery. Fisher answered before the end of the first quarter, however, as senior Jordan Leuze notched the Cardinals' first goal of the game with 1:22 left in the period, with an assist to fellow senior Timmy Salit. The first quarter ended with the Cardinals down just two, 3-1. Tufts responded with a flurry of goals in the second quarter, scoring seven unanswered goals in the second quarter while stifling the Cardinals' attack to go into halftime up 10-1.
Junior Brady Mason, a Maryland native, scored in his home state with 11:20 left in the third quarter to make it 10-2, before Tufts scored five unanswered. The Cardinals responded in the fourth with a run of their own. With 11:08 to play Brett Seaman found the back of the net, followed by Braeden McNeill just over 30 seconds later. With 8:07 left on the clock, Garrett Sutton converted a man-up opportunity and with 5:41, Mason added to the teams tally. Tufts converted one final chance with three minutes to play and when the contest went final, the Cardinals fell 16-6.
Mason led the way with three points on two goals and one assist. Ben Hammond was the goalkeeper for Fisher and saw the Jumbos take 57 shots. Along with the 16 allowed goals, Hammond made 18 saves on the day.
Fisher finishes the season 14-8, including wins against ranked Wesleyan and St. Lawrence in the earlier rounds of the NCAA tournament. The trip to the quarterfinals was the deepest the men's lacrosse program has ever gone, and the furthest any Fisher team sport has gone since the women's lacrosse team reached the NCAA semifinals in 2021.
