WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
- For the third time in as many seasons, SUNY Morrisville football claimed the season opening win over Kean University, stunning the Cougars on their opening drive as they posted the 7-0 victory on Drake Field in Morrisville Saturday afternoon.
- Morrisville, taking the field on a dreary, rainy day, outgained Kean 289-yards to 203 in total offense on the day, with a majority of their offensive game coming on the ground.
- Isaac Sylvain (Schenectady, N.Y.) led all ball carriers with 140-net yards on 32 carries.
- Alek Britten (Schenectady, N.Y.) earned the start at quarterback for the Mustangs, completing 8-of-18 passes for 112 yards and a touchdown score.
- Quamel Jarvis (Rochester, N.Y.) started his senior season with a 106-yard game, reining in five.
- Morrisville's defense limited Kean to just 79-yards rushing, holding lead running back Julian Jones to a net 38 on the day.
- Camerin Camacho (Cape Coral, Fla.) led the Morrisville defense with a 12-tackle effort, registering two for a loss of two yards and a sack for a loss of one.
- Camacho also recorded a quarterback hurry, with fellow teammate Dillon English (Webster, N.Y.) added eight stops, two and a half tackles for a loss of two yards.
- Morrisville's secondary posted a problem for Kean's offense, picking off a game total four, including two that landed in the hands of Scotty Howard (Binghamton, N.Y.).
- Shane Cook (Binghamton, N.Y.) and Joshua Williams (Yonkers, N.Y.) also recorded interceptions in the bout.
- Kean's John Perry went 7-for-18 for 46 yards passing and three interceptions before being replaced by Rocco Pellegrini in the fourth.
- Pellegrini put together a 10-for-13 effort for 78 yards to generate some offense for the Cougars late in the game, also registering an interception.
- Christian Bujno was the Cougars main target, pulling in 12 for 22 yads, while tight end Sal Marchione added 38 yards on five receptions.
- Chris Amos had a 13-tackle effort for Kean, while Zamar Grove and Meir Pittman added a 12 and 10 tackle effort.
- It was Morrisville's first possession of the game that proved to be the offensive difference as both defensive units battled it out for the remainder of the contest.
- On the opening drive for the Mustangs, Britten hit a wide-open Quamel Jarvis in stride just over 40-yards downfield where he outran the Kean secondary and walked into the end zone for the opening score of the 2024 slate.
- Kean had the opportunity to even the score late in the second, but the overthrown pass landed in the hands of Howard on the Mustangs 11-yard line and returned possession to the hosts for the remainder of the half.
- Midway through the fourth quarter, Kena attempted to move into Morrisville territory, but once again the Mustangs defense turned them away as Perry was intercepted by Cook on the Mustangs 30.
- Kean's longest drive of the afternoon came with 6:05 showing on the clock, moving the ball deep in the red zone with just over a minute remaining in the contest.
- Threatening to score, Pellegrini saw Ja'Mar Harvey (Webster, N.Y.) hunting him down in the backfield and Pellegrini caught a glimpse of Bujno in the end zone.
- Bujno, though, quickly became swallowed by the Mustang defense, as Anai Brake (Carteret, N.J.) knocked the ball out of Bunjo's hands and into fellow defensive back Howards, who collected his second interception of the day to keep the visitors off the board and secure the win.
WHAT'S NEXT:
- Morrisville has a bye week in the second week of the season and will return to the field Sept. 21 as they head to Catholic University for a non-conference battle.
