ALFRED, NY - The Alfred State football team secured their first Empire 8 win in a dominant performance against SUNY Morrisville, 41-21 on Saturday. The Pioneers advance to 3-2 on the season, and 1-1 in conference play.
Noah Currier led the Pioneers offense as he tallied 292 yards on 35 carriers for three touchdowns. Josh Graham also had a good game as he rushed for 104 yards on 20 carriers. Justin Horvath went 10-15 for 77 yards and a touchdown to Elijah Georges.
On the defensive end, Donnell Hall came away with two interceptions, and he returned one for a pick-6. Aaron Ellis led the way in tackles as he notched seven. Logan McGuire and Ryan Heinz both came away with six tackles each.
The Pioneers opened the game with a nine play 46-yard drive that was capped by a 24-yard touchdown run from Graham. The Pioneers held onto that 7-0 lead until the second quarter.
In the second quarter, Currier got the Pioneers on the board with a two-yard touchdown run for the 14-0 lead. The Mustangs got close to scoring on the following possession, but Hall pulled down his first interception of the game in the endzone to stop the threat. After a Pios punt, Hall tallied his second interception and returned it to the house to make it a 21-0 lead. Following a Mustangs touchdown, Currier put in an 85 yard rush up the middle for a touchdown, and the 28-7 lead. Morrisville was able to get another touchdown to cut their deficit to 28-14 at halftime
Morrisville scored their last points in the third quarter as the Pioneers scored 13 points in the fourth quarter and held the Mustangs scoreless. In the fourth quarter, Currier scored his third touchdown on a 34 rush up the middle that capped a six play 62-yard drive that made it a 34-21 game. On the next Alfred State postseason, Horvath found Georges for a 14-yard touchdown that capped a nine play, 89-yard drive, to make it a 41-21 game.
The Pioneers will have the week off before hitting the road to take on SUNY Brockport on October 18
th with kickoff set for 12 pm.
