ALFRED, NY – Consistent scoring efforts from the Alfred University football team resulted in a 34-21 win against SUNY Morrisville on Saturday afternoon from Yunevich Stadium. Thomas Welch (Avon, NY/Avon) led the defense with 10 tackles, eight of which were solo.
"It was a lot of fun coaching the seniors in their final game today," Head Coach
Bob Rankl said. "What a great group of young men that we have. They've meant a lot to this football program over the last four years and I'm proud of how they persevered throughout a season that had some ups and downs. They never waived and provided great leadership throughout the season."
The Saxons offense got off to a quick start in the opening quarter, with
Caleb Eastman (Colonie, NY/Colonie Central) tossing a 45-yard touchdown to Buchsbaum to give AU the initial lead. Later in the quarter with Morrisville driving,
Aidan Ploss (Herkimer, NY/Herkimer) recovered a fumble to give the ball back to the Saxons. AU capitalized with a 14-play drive extending into the second quarter that resulted in a touchdown for Nyquist. Following a touchdown by the Mustangs, the Saxons responded with Nyquist's second score of the afternoon to take a 20-7 lead into halftime.
Morrisville was the first to score in the early stages of the second half, but an eight-play drive for Alfred University resulted in a third touchdown for Nyquist from the two-yard line. In the following quarter, Nyquist found the back of the end zone once again to add to his impressive performance. The Mustangs scored late in the fourth quarter, but AU relied on their run game to close out the game with the victory.
