WEBSTER, NY – SUNY Geneseo leads day two of the 2025 Empire 8 Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship, held the Webster Aquatic Center on Thursday, February 20.
The nationally-ranked Knights have 569 team points to pace the field with ahead of six-time defending champion Nazareth University, who has 262 points, SUNY Brockport has 261 points, while Hartwick College is fourth with 254 points and Alfred University is fifth with 159 points.
Abby Funk of SUNY Geneseo, who won the 500-yard freestyle last night, won for the second straight evening, this time in the 200-yard freestyle by just over a second over teammate Hannah Brockman with a time of 1:54.66.
Like Funk, Emily LeFrois-Heath of Nazareth was victorious for the second straight night, winning the 400-yard individual medley by just over four seconds in a time of 4:33.26. She took the 200-yard medley relay last night.
Alise Hale of SUNY Geneseo broke a nine-year old Empire 8 Championship record (Sarah Jurczyk of Stevens; 55.55 seconds in 2016) and recorded an NCAA “B” cut time in winning the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 55.18 seconds. Teammate Alex Sotek placed second and also cleared the “B” cut threshold, hitting the wall in 55.78 seconds.
Sotek teamed with Erin Johannsen, Nina Chicatelli, and Courtney Sorbello wrapped up the evening by recording an NCAA “B” cut qualifying time in the 200-yard freestyle relay, winning by more than three seconds in a time of 1:34.83. The time was just shy of the E8 Championship record set in 2011.
Nazareth’s Elizabeth Tripp won her second Empire 8 Championship in three seasons in the 1-meter diving event with a score of 476.75. She also won the event in 2023. Tripp will go for her third 3-meter championship on Saturday.
Day three action begins with the prelims at 10 a.m. on Friday. Day three finals events begin at 5:30 p.m.
