SUNY Geneseo graduate student Trent Makowiec won the national title in the 3-meter diving during day one of the 2025 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championship on Wednesday, March 19 at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
Makowiec qualified for the finals after finishing second in the preliminaries with a score of 532.65. He secured his first national championship, second all-time for an Empire 8 men’s swimming and diving student-athlete and first since 2013, rallying to defeat Avery Balch of Centre with final score of 558.35 to 555.35.
Alex Sotek and Brian Pabisch both earned Honorable Mention All-America plaudits on day one, both in the 50-yard freestyle events.
Sotek recorded a time of 23.05 in the prelims finishing tenth, before placing 12th in the finals with a time of 23.18.
Pabisch shattered a 19-year old league record in the preliminaries of the 50-yard freestyle, recording a time of 20.15. That snapped the previous record held by Erik Zelbacher of RIT, set in 2006 (20.19). He finished 16th overall in the finals.
Jordan Nielsen of the Knights placed 33rd in the 50-free prelims with a time of 20.57 seconds, while Abby Funk was 41st in the 500-yard freestyle prelims.
Geneseo’s 400-yard medley relay team of Nina Chicatelli, Emily Thomas, Alise Hale and Sotek placed 17th in the prelims with a time of 3:48.70.
Day two of the NCAA Championships takes place on Thursday at 10 a.m. with preliminary action.
