UTICA, NY - The Utica University women's lacrosse team defeated the Russell Sage Gators 20-3 on Wednesday afternoon. Grace Stuhlman tallied her 200th career point and is now third all-time in program history.
Point production: Jordan Kowalski led Utica with six points off four goals and two assists. Alyssa Specchio netted her fourth hat trick this season while also dishing out two assists. Grace scored twice and totaled three assists. She currently has 148 career goals (fourth all-time). Maria Stuhlman (three goals), Bella Kolb had a season-high three goals on four shots on goal, Belicia Biette (two goals), Courtney Fish (two goals), Abby Cangemi (one goal), Alexis Alteri (one assist), Jessica Marciano (one assist) and Kendall Best (one assist).
Angelina Borowiec got the start in goal for the Pioneers, making 10 saves. She made two saves in the first half and eight in the second (five in the third quarter).
Grace and Alteri combined for 12 draw controls, totaling six each. Maria notched two and five other players had at least one.
Utica played great team defense, forcing Sage into poor shooting angles. Utica outshot Sage 34 to 19 and 25 to 13 on goal.
Maria started the game off strong for Utica, scoring the first goal of the game just 30 seconds in. Sage had an answer just two minutes later with a goal from Madison Walter. With 10 minutes to go in the first quarter, Grace dished the ball to Kolb for the quick catch and finish, giving Utica a one point lead once again. The Pioneers got their third goal of the day as Maria scored her second goal with just under nine minutes left in the first. Soon after, Grace got herself on the scoreboard giving Utica a 4-1 lead. Utica went on to dominate the remainder of the first quarter, with Kolb scoring once again and Specchio bagging a hat-trick.
The Pioneers did not slow down in the second, as Kowalski scored in just under a minute. Grace added on to her goal tally scoring Utica's tenth goal of the game, giving them a nine point lead with nine minutes left to go in the second quarter. The Gators scored their second goal of the night when Tristyne Valenze found the ball on the arc and was able to beat the Pioneer goalie with a quick shot, making the score 12-2.
Utica remained in control for the rest of the game, managing to keep more than a 10 point lead throughout the second half. Kowalski had a stand-out performance, finishing the game with four goals, leading the Pioneers to a 20-3 win.
On Saturday, April 19 the team will be hosting once again, this time against Alfred University. The game is set to start at 1 pm.
Utica (6-6, 3-3 Empire 8) hosts Alfred on Saturday, April 19 at 1 p.m. The team will honor its six seniors prior to the first draw.
