UTICA, NY - After an incredible 18-year run under the direction of longtime Utica University women's lacrosse head coach Kristin St. Hilaire, the Pioneer women's lacrosse program will be under new leadership this coming season due to St. Hilaire's move to an administrative position within the department. One of St. Hilaire's first moves as Director of Athletics: the hiring of an extremely successful and experienced coach to usher the program into a new era. Effective July 21st, the Utica University women's lacrosse team will be led by head coach
Andrea Cofrin, who makes the move over to Utica after a strong five-year tenure at nearby Morrisville. Coach Cofrin has extensive experience at all levels of collegiate lacrosse and has made a career out of immensely improving upon each program she's been a part of.
While with Morrisville, Cofrin brought great success to the program and guided them through their transition from the United East to the NAC in 2024, then from the NAC to the SUNYAC in 2025. In her three seasons as head coach of the Mustangs, Cofrin's squad played in three different conferences, with the team reaching the finals of the United East Tournament and the NAC Tournament in her first and second years, respectively. Cofrin's Mustangs achieved an 8-9 record both of those years and sported the NAC Rookie of the Year in 2024 (Anyssia Ingersoll).
Cofrin also spent the 2022 and 2021 seasons as a volunteer assistant coach for the Mustangs, providing valuable guidance and helping them to a 6-7 record in 2022, and a 7-3 record in 2021. 2021 saw the team capture the NEAC Championship and advance to that season's NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Tournament, losing in the first round to eventual National Champion Salisbury.
Prior to her time with the Mustangs she served as the head women's lacrosse coach and an associate professor of physical education at Columbia University for five seasons. During her time with Columbia, she registered the most wins in program history in the Ivy League and appeared in the Ivy League Tournament, while having several single-season and career records rewritten. In addition, Cofrin had several players named to the All-Ivy League Team.
Cofrin also served as an assistant with the Yale women's lacrosse program, serving as the recruiting and defensive coordinator, while guiding the program to an overall 18
th rank among NCAA Division I programs in scoring defense.
Before joining the Bulldogs, she spent a year with the Saint Anselm College program as head coach, finishing 13-5 on the season in 2014, while ranking ninth nationally. Her program was one of eight teams selected to appear in the Division II NCAA Tournament.
Cofrin also spent five seasons on the sidelines at Siena College where her squad appeared four straight seasons in the MAAC Tournament. Across her career with the Saints, she amassed 18 All-MAAC selections and 23 All-Academic student-athletes, while coaching the program's first-ever Defensive Player of the Year. In 2009, she was named the MAAC Anaconda Sports Coach of the Year.
Her involvement extended beyond the playing field while at Siena, guiding the Saints in community involvement with local organizations such as the Ronald McDonald House, Habitat for Humanity, and Double H Ranch – Camp Ride Challenge.
Cofrin also has a prior stint at Siena as head assistant in 2005 before joining the staff at the University of Dallas the following season as head coach of the women's lacrosse and soccer programs. She also had a two-year stint with Lees-McRae College as head coach of the women's lacrosse program. Cofrin's coaching career began at Oneonta State, where she helped the team to a 10-6 mark in 2004 as an assistant.
A 2003 graduate of Frostburg State University, Cofrin was a four-year starter at defense and midfield, guiding the team to two ECAC Championship Tournament appearances and serving as captain her senior season. In addition, she had a two-year soccer career while earning her degree in sociology.
For several years, Cofrin has been active in the local community with camps and clinics, while maintaining an active membership with US Lacrosse and the IWLCA. Cofrin is a 2010 graduate of the NCAA Coaches Academy and 2011 graduate of the NCAA Women's Coaches Academy Dimension I.
She holds certification in Ayurveda Nutrition and Precision Nutrition and is a 200-RYT Yoga Instructor.
Cofrin will take over a young Pioneer program that is two years removed from an Empire 8 Championship appearance, also making the Empire 8 Tournament this past campaign. Keep an eye on the Utica Pioneers athletics website for more information about the 2026 Utica University women's lacrosse season!
