St. John Fisher Locks Up Regular Season Title and No. 1 Seed For E8 Women's Lacrosse Tournament With Win Over Keuka

KEUKA PARK, NY – The St. John Fisher women's lacrosse team locked up the No. 1 overall seed for the upcoming Empire 8 Conference Championship Tournament with a 27-0 thrashing of Keuka College on Wednesday night. 

The Cardinals improved to 12-4 overall and 8-0 in conference play with the victory, while Keuka dropped to 2-11 and 0-8, respectively. St. John Fisher will have a first-round bye in the E8 Tournament and host the No. 4 or No. 5 seed in the semifinals next Thursday at Growney Stadium. 

Sophomore attacker Chloe Scanlan and junior attacker Ellie Leisen powered the Cardinals' offense with six points each. Scanlan scored three goals and set up three others, while Leisen struck for four goals and added a pair of assists. 

Five other Cardinals tallied two points or more, with junior attacker Chelsea Lopata (four goals, one assist) amassing five points and senior attacker Dharma Makarowky (four goals) recording four. Junior attacker Taylor Maxam (two goals), sophomore attacker/midfielder Athena Lazina (two goals) and freshman attacker Camryn Smith (one goal, one assist) each chipped in two points. 

Fisher limited Keuka to just two shots in the contest and controlled 20 of the game's 28 draws. 

How It Happened

The goals piled up in a hurry for the Cardinals in the opening quarter as they put 11 on the board, with five of them coming in the first five minutes. Lopata led the Cardinals with three, while Makarowsky and Leisen each scored twice. Scanlan, Lazina, senior attacker Sydney Closinski and sophomore attacker Ally Stank contributed one goal each. 

The Cardinals went into halftime leading 18-0 after padding their advantage with seven more tallies in the second quarter, during which Makarowky and Leisen scored twice more. Scanlan, sophomore midfielder Charlotte Walter and senior attacker Megan McGrath had Fisher's other three goals in the frame. 

Lopata, Maxam, Smith, senior midfielder Kaley Griffin and freshman midfielder Kyra Gross accounted for the Cardinals' tallies in the third quarter. Scanlan, Lazina, Maxam and junior attacker Olivia Gonnella capped the scoring in the fourth. 

Game Notes

  • Scanlan set career highs in total points and assists. 

  • Leisen recorded her ninth game this season with five points or more. 

  • Leisen has had five points or more in five of the Cardinals' last six games. 

  • Leisen has scored four or more goals in six games this season.

  • Senior defender Maddie Lowney caused two turnovers and controlled a game-high seven draws. 

  • Griffin picked up three ground balls and controlled five draws. 

  • Sophomore defender Addison Peters caused two turnovers and recovered a game-high four ground balls.

The Cardinals conclude the regular season at 1 p.m. on Saturday against Hartwick at Growney Stadium. They will honor their seniors before the contest.
