ROCHESTER, NY (nazathletics.com) - Nazareth Women's Basketball (18-4, 12-1) picked up a win over SUNY Geneseo (15-7, 9-4), 68-56, Saturday afternoon inside Kidera Gymnasium. The win extends the Golden Flyers streak to ten and continues their Empire 8 lead with only three games left in the regular season. Senior
Molly Benetti reached the 1,000-point milestone in the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams started slow before Sarina McDowell got things going for the Golden Flyers with two made free-throws. Tessa Schuey made a quick pass to Molly Benetti who was wide open in the paint to tie things up 4-4 with 5 minutes left in the first quarter. Continuing to bring the heat, Kiara Anglin and Madalyn Kelly hit back to back three's bringing the Golden Flyers ahead by six.
- Geneseo started pushing back before Katie MacLachlan tossed a half court lob to Kelly for an easy layup bringing the Golden Flyers back ahead 12-10 at the end of the first quarter.
- McDowell started off the second quarter sinking a free throw before Nazareth continued with strong heavy defense, forcing Geneseo turnovers.
- Nazareth continued with a strong nine point lead with efforts from MacLachlan, Anglin and Benetti with five minutes left in the first half. Schuey sank both free-throws, bringing the lead back to nine. McDowell made a 3-point shot to bring the lead to double digits with 2:22 to go in the first half.
- Nazareth maintained the lead a majority of the first half ending with a nine point lead and a score of 34-25 at the end of the half.
- Both teams came out hard to start the second half. Benetti guarded the basket with great assistance on defense, registering two blocks before hitting a two-point shot in the paint to reach 1,000 points.
- The Knights made a strong push in the start of the second half keeping the game close, however the Golden Flyers stayed strong on both defense and offense, keeping an eight point lead at the end of the third quarter with a score of 51-43.
- Starting off the fourth quarter, the Golden Flyers came out hot leading by 15 with a score of 60-45 with five minutes to go in the final quarter.
- The Golden Flyers ended with a twelve point lead and a final score of 68-56.
GAME NOTES
- Molly Benetti led Nazareth with 14 points in the win, her 14th game in double-digit scoring this season. Her performance today brought Benetti above 1,000 points total in her Golden Flyer career. She also added five rebounds and a team-high five assists.
- Kiara Anglin also finished with 14 points on strong shooting. She added four rebounds and two assists.
- Madalyn Kelly scored 15 points, knocking down three 3-pointers. She also tallied two assists.
- Katie MacLachlan contributed nine points, hitting three, 3-pointers. She contributed a team-high six assists.
- Sarina McDowell also scored nine points while earning the most rebounds on the team with eight.
