Nazareth College is in the lead after the opening day of the 2020 Empire 8 and Allegheny Empire Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships, held at the Webster Aquatic Center and hosted by Hartwick College. The Golden Flyers won four of the five men’s events on Wednesday night to take the overall team lead with 278 points. Hartwick is second in the Empire 8 standings with 206 points, while Alfred is third with 190 and Utica is fourth with 73. Nazareth also leads the overall Allegheny Empire team scores with 430 points.

It was all Nazareth from the start. Dylan Long made a furious rally to win the 500-yard freestyle in the final strokes. Teammate John Koch used a powerful burst to win the 200-yard individual medley by nearly two seconds. In what was the closest race of the night, Hartwick first-year Diallo Marshall edged out Tom Griffin of Nazareth by just four one-hundredths of a second to win the 50-yard freestyle in 20.84 seconds. Griffin would team with Koch, Luca Biagiotti and Mark Dunkelberg to roll to a decisive win in the 200-yard medley relay.

Nazareth Junior Sidney Taylor won his first Empire 8 diving title in the 3-meter event, recording a score of 487.30.

Day two action continues on Thursday from the Webster Aquatic Center, with preliminary action starting at 10 a.m. and the finals getting underway at 5:30 p.m.
