WHEELING, WV - The Utica College men's golf team completed first round action at the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship on Tuesday. The Pioneers are currently in 35th place after putting a 56-over-par team score of 336 on the board at the Oglebay Resort in Wheeling, West Virginia.
The Pioneers played the first day of the tournament on the resort's Arnold Palmer course, which is a Par 70 layout measuring 6,621 yards.
Empire 8 Champion Josh Kienz led the squad with a four-over-par 74 in the opening round to run in 36th place in the individual competition. His lone birdie of the day came on the second hole, a Par 5 measuring 500 yards. Kienz is in the hunt to make the individual cut if he can put together a strong second round. He needs to be one of the top six individuals not on a team in the top 18, and is currently five shots off the lead.
Rookie Adam Woodmansee opened with a 14-over par 84 and is in a tie for 160th place. Veteran golfer Joe Miga landed at a 19-over par 89, and senior Brandon Young also posted the same score and birdied the Par 5 2nd hole. Junior Nick Visconti rounded out the UC lineup at a round of 91.
Utica will take on the Jones Course in round two, beginning at an updated tee time of 10:15 a.m. Wednesday.
