Alfred University, Houghton College, Nazareth College, Russell Sage College, St. John Fisher and Utica College will compete at the 2021 Empire 8 Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Friday, May 7 and Saturday, May 8 at the Polisseni Track and Field complex the campus of St. John Fisher. 2021 Empire 8 Team Capsules (Order Based on 2019 Championship Finish)

St. John Fisher is looking for its first Empire 8 Outdoor Track and Field Championship after winning the 2021 Empire 8 Indoor Championship for the first time in March. Sophomore Riley Corey is the current Empire 8 leader in the 5,000- and 10,000-meters. She won the 5,000-meters at the 2021 E8 Indoor Championships and annexed the 2021 Spring E8 Cross Country title. Teammates Lauren DeMichele, Morgan Gould and Laura Witt are right behind Corey in both long distance events. The Cardinals have a strong group of sprinters in Maria Covelli, Breanna Lambert, McKenna Cone and Olivia Pawlewicz, who will look to gain valuable points. Cone is also a strong contender in the hurdles and jumps. Pawlewicz, DeMichele, Alivia Collins and Chelsea Lamphere are also contenders in the middle distance events. On the field side, senior Jordan Lehman, the 2021 Empire 8 Indoor Championship Field Athlete of the Meet, will be a strong contender in both throwing events, along with Makenna King and Jenna Costello. Alondra Arroyo and Jordyn Poole are among the league leaders in the pole vault, while Claudia Vogel will vie for points in the high jump. Arroyo was the 2021 E8 Indoor Pole Vault Champion.
Utica is the lone Empire 8 institution who has won an Empire 8 Outdoor Track and Field Championship, having done so in 2018. Sophomore Kelsey Wands enters the championship with the 21st best long jump in Division III to date. Laura Meade is a top contender in the triple jump. Both enter the 2021 championship with the second best marks in their respective events. Meade is also a top sprinter who will contend in the 100-meters. Caroline Castriotta was the 2019 champion in the 100-meters and enters the meet with the third best time in that event. She is also a top contender in the pole vault. Sophomore thrower Jane Fahy has the league’s best toss in the shot put (12.69 meters) and will be a contender in the discuss as well. Gabrielle DeSanctis and Skyler Whorf will look to score for Utica in the throws as well. Cora Maxwell is a top contenders in the high jump and javelin.
Nazareth, who nearly won the 2021 Empire 8 Indoor Track and Field Championship, is looking for its first outdoor crown. Junior Brenna Johnson, the 2021 E8 Indoor Field Athlete of the Meet, enters the outdoor championship with the top current times among all Empire 8 student-athletes in the 100- and 200-meters and is tied for the top high jump. Senior Abbey Szumloz will vie for points in the sprint events as well. Hannah Ragule, the 2021 E8 Indoor Rookie of the Meet, Szumloz, Lauren Bendall and Sydney Vanderhoof are top contenders in the hurdles. Senior Elizabeth Decker and junior Claire Bargabos will contend in the middle distance events as well. Emily Weaver, Lilianna Hanning and Hayley Cronin are looking to earn points in the distance events. Ragule and Johnson are among the top jumpers in the league. Ragule is the current E8 leader in both the triple jump. Lea Richard is the Gabrielle Pighetti are a strong combo in the throwing events.
Houghton will look to win its first E8 title in 2021. Sophomore Amanda Burrichter enters the championship meet with the top time in the 1,500-meters and is fourth in the 5,000-meters. Senior Edena Sanchez is a two-time defending champion in the 800-meters and enters the meet with the top current time among E8 student-athletes in 2021. She is also the E8 leader and has a top-50 time nationally in the 400-meters and is also second in the 200-meters. Junior Kealy DeForest and Haley DeJager will represent the Highlanders in the sprint events, while Mary Shaker and Leah O’Connell will run in the middle distance races. Julia Hotchkiss will represent the Highlanders in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Houghton is always well represented in the relay events and this season should be no different. Alexandria Wisniewski is a top contender in the 100-meter and 400-meter hurdles. Hayden Williamson enters as the weekend tied for the top spot in the E8 in the high jump, while Katie Widmer will look to score points in the jumps. Alyssa Lyon and Kathryn Evans are Houghton’s top throwers.
Alfred enters the 2021 Empire 8 Championship looking to improve off of a sixth place finish in 2019. Junior Madison Palmer is a strong contender in the throwing events. She is second in the Empire 8 with a throw of 11.72 meters in the shot put and has the fourth best toss in the hammer throw. Ana Ion and Esther Boateng will also vie for points in the throws. Ion also enters the meet as a top contender in all three jumps events. Krissy Roberts and Bianca Durso are both strong contenders in the jumping events. Senior Holly Passetti is the Empire 8 leader in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and will represent the Saxons in the 1,500-meters. First-year Ashley Page is a top contender in the 400-meter hurdles.
Russell Sage will look to continue to make strides as a track and field program and has a group of student-athletes who are among top contenders in a handful of events. Mackenzie Feeney, Molly Kane and Emma Cronin will contend in the middle distance and longer distance events. Cronin is a top contender in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as well. Victoria Johnson, Alyssa Fitzgerald and Skylar Grybos will also look to score in the sprint events. Monalissa Carius, Johnson and Jasmine Zollman are set to compete in the jump events, while Carius, Claire Connolly and Fiona Mulligan will participate in throws events.
