Dominant Performances Highlight Day One of 2021 Empire 8 Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships

Host St. John Fisher holds a slim lead after the opening day of the 2021 Empire 8 Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship at the Polisseni Track and Field Complex in rainy, cold conditions on Friday, May 7. St. John Fisher has 84 points, 15 points ahead of second-place Houghton, who has 69 points after eight of the 21 scored events.
 
Utica’s Kelsey Wands shattered an eight-year old Empire 8 Championship record in the long jump, winning the event with an impressive leap of 5.76 meters. That jump was the fifth best in all of Division III this season. Wands’ teammate Caroline Castriotta took the pole vault, clearing 3.05 meters.
 
Four different student-athletes earned wins for the Cardinals on Friday. Alivia Collins opened the meet by winning the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 11:58.07, while Riley Corey annexed the 10,000-meter run by just under nine seconds in 39:37.52. Jenna Costello emerged victorious in the javelin throw, while Jordan Lehman fired the hammer 48.09 for a convincing win in that event.
 
Houghton won the 4 x 800-meter relay for the second consecutive year. The quartet of Leah O’Connell, Julia Hotchkiss, Edena Sanchez and Elisabeth Kettinger crossed the finish line first in a time of 10:23.23. Sanchez also earned an individual win in the 400-meters, recording a time of 59.89 seconds.
