St. John Fisher wins first Empire 8 Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championship

Host St. John Fisher won its first Empire 8 Outdoor Track and Field Championship in program history, holding off East Avenue rival Nazareth College to win the 2021 team title. The Cardinals finished with 197 team points, 20 ahead of the second place Golden Flyers. Utica College placed third with 92 points.
 
The Cardinals had seven individuals/relay teams win events over the two-day meet.
 
St. John Fisher senior thrower Jordan Lehman was named 2021 Empire 8 Outdoor Field Athlete of the Meet after winning both the discuss and hammer throws. She was also third in the shot put. Lehman won the discus with a toss of 36.58 meters and romped in the hammer throw, defeating her nearest competitor by more than six meters with a throw of 48.09 meters.
 
Alfred sophomore Ana Ion shared Outdoor Field Athlete of the Meet honors with Lehman. Ion showed off incredible versatility with a second place finish, three third place finishes and a pair of four place finishes. She was second in the javelin, third in the 100-meter hurdles, high jump and triple jump. Ion was part of Alfred’s 4 x 400-meter relay that finished fourth, while she was also fourth in the long jump.
 
Nazareth junior Brenna Johnson was named 2021 Empire 8 Outdoor Track Athlete of the Meet after winning both the 100- and 200-meter dash events, while serving as a key member of Nazareth’s winning 4 x 400-meter relay team. She crossed the finish line in 12.63 seconds in the 100-meters and 26.13 seconds in the 200-meters. Johnson was also second in the long jump with an impressive leap of 5.39 meters.
 
Utica’s Kelsey Wands shattered an eight-year old Empire 8 Championship record in the long jump on Friday, winning the event with an impressive leap of 5.76 meters.
 
Houghton senior Edena Sanchez won a pair of individual titles, in both the 400- and 800-meter events and was a member of the victorious 4 x 800-meter relay team. Nazareth senior Abbey Szumloz won both the 100- and 400-meter hurdle championships and was a member of Nazareth’s winning 4 x 400-meter relay team. St. John Fisher sophomore Riley Corey won both long distance events, the 5,000- and 10,000-meters.
