OSWEGO, NY – Alea Steigerwald of the St. John Fisher College women's volleyball team continued to etch her name in the team's record book as she became just the fourth player in the program's 48-year history to surpass 1,000 career kills and digs on Friday as the Cardinals swept SUNY Canton before surviving a five-set thriller against St. Lawrence as part of the Oswego State Invitational inside Max Ziel Gymnasium.
With the wins, Fisher improved to 6-3 on the season and will return to the hardwood beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday against Potsdam before closing out the tournament at 3 p.m. with the host Lakers.
FISHER 3, CANTON 0
The Cardinals' hitting power was on full display throughout the match after head coach
Kelly Greapentrog's squad hit .369 overall with 32 total kills. Gracie Jacob led the way with nine kills on 18 swings to go along with four aces and 10 digs while Brooklyn Kicherer added eight kills of her own.
Brooke Segars finished with five kills and 10 digs in the win while Kristen McIntosh and Lindsey DeBonis combined to hammer home eight kills. Kara Kingsbury posted a game-high 15 digs for Fisher and Emily Brochey led the way with 17 assists over three sets.
FISHER 3, ST. LAWRENCE 2
A two-time All-American, Steigerwald posted her third double-double of the year after notching 17 kills and 18 digs in all. The Penfield native, who has been named the Empire 8 Player of the Year in each of the last three seasons, sits in fifth place in Fisher's storied history with 1,186 kills and now has 1,004 career digs to her credit.
Delayne Young contributed 14 kills of her own in the marathon match while DeBonis chipped in with 11 kills and a career-high 21 digs. Sydney French put away seven kills at the net and added five blocks while Katie Leaty was the driving force behind Fisher's attack with 41 helpers.
Defensively, Julia Halsey led the way after the libero was credited with a team-leading 25 digs while the Cardinals accounted for 13 blocks in all.
