LANCASTER, PA – The Medaille men's soccer team ended their season today in the first round of the NCAA Tournament against the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons. losing by a score of 5-2 at Franklin & Marshall College. The Mavericks, who won the 2022 Empire 8 Championship last week, have their season end with a 12-2-6 record.
The Red Dragons were the first to get some offense going with taking their first shot at 4:12. Their second shot ended in a save by keeper
David Mighten (Nottingham, England, The Westbridgford). From there, the Mavs were able to bring the ball up the field. At 8:59,
Ander Castillo (Bilbao, Spain, Mater Dei Catholic) took the first shot for the Mavs, which went high. They kept the ball and Castillo took another shot, then Jaime Mendo took one right after that was blocked. At 19:37, the Red Dragons were able to steal the ball away on defense and went to pass back to their keeper. Castillo was coming up behind him. The keeper misjudged the ball and Castillo was right there to grab the ball and tap it in for an easy goal. The Mavs took the lead 1-0.
Nine minutes later, the Red Dragons answered back.
Rodrigo Perez (Palencia, Spain, IES Victorio Macho) was able to take a shot one minute later, but that was saved. After a foul on the Mavericks, the Red Dragons brought the ball down the field. It ended in their second goal at 30:43. The Mavericks were trailing. The Red Dragons took the rest of the shots before the half ended with one of them being saved by Mighten. The Mavs trailed 2-1 heading into halftime.
The Red Dragons were ready once the half ended. Just two and a half minutes in, they netted their third goal off of a corner kick. Things started to get chippy from there. At 62:15, Castillo struck again in the bottom corner of the net. The Mavs were down 3-2 with the chance to tie or even pull ahead. The action was in the middle of the field from here with multiple cards being given out to both teams. At 78:03 Cortland answered putting them ahead by two again. A little over one minute later, the Red Dragons sealed it with their fifth goal.
Game leaders for the Mavericks were Castillo with two goals on four shots on goal,
Eric Metade (Brampton, ON, St. Edmund Campion) with two shots, and Mighten with two saves.
This will finish out a historic season for the Mavericks. In their very first season in the Empire 8, they won the Championship while only suffering one loss to conference teams. The Mavs will say goodbye to five seniors, while also looking forward to keeping the majority of their team for the 2023 season.
