WEBSTER, NY – The Alfred State College men and Nazareth College women continue to lead after day two of the 2022 Allegheny Empire 8 Swimming and Diving Championship, held at the Webster Aquatic Center on Thursday, February 17.
The Pioneers of Alfred State lead the men’s championship with 372 points, just ahead of 2020 champion Nazareth College, who has 361 points after Thursday. Alfred University (307.5), Penn State Behrend (281) and Hartwick College (256) round out the top five.
Tim Compton of Penn State Behrend led a 1-2 finish in the 500-yard freestyle, with a time of 4:41.21. Kellen Fltecher of Alfred State earned a win in the 200-yard individual medley by just under two seconds in 1:54.31. Alfred State’s 200-yard freestykle relay team of Fletcher, Stuart Yates, Jazz Widney and Alderwald cllosed out the night by earning a close win over Nazareth in a time of 1:24.85.
Defending champion Nazareth leads the women after day two with 493 points, nearly doubling Alfred State, who has 251 points. Penn State Behrend (250), Hartwick (244.5) and Alfred University (217.5) round out the top five.
Nazareth graduate student Taylor Robey won the 50-yard freestyle by nearly two seconds in an NCAA “B” cut and Empire 8 record time of 22.79 seconds. Robey earned her second win of the night and third of the week, teaming with Abbie Santos, Julie Filipski and Paige Pasquarella to roll to a nearly six second win in the 200-yard freestyle relay, hitting the wall in 1:36.67.
Santos also earned her second straight E8 title in the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2:13.37.
Nazareth earned a 1-2-3 sweep in the 1-meter diving event. Alexa Rizzo emerged victorious with a score of 473.85 to defeat teammate Elizabeth Tripp, who had 458.85 points and two-time defending champion Allie Norwood placed third with 450.15 points.
