Defending Champion St. John Fisher Leads After Day One of 2022 Empire 8 Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships

Defending champion St. John Fisher College leads after day one of the 2022 Empire 8 Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship from Golden Flyer Stadium on the campus of Nazareth College on Friday, May 6. St. John Fisher has 98 points, 26 points ahead of second-place Nazareth, who has 72 points after eight of the 21 scored events.
 
Host Nazareth won four events on Friday, including three on the field side. Senior Brenna Johnson won the long jump with a leap of 5.73 meters, which just missed shattering an Empire 8 Championship meet mark. Lea Richard annexed the hammer throw with a toss of 43.76 meters, while Anna Ahlquist won the pole vault, clearing a facility record 3.50 meters. Nazareth's 4 x 800-meter relay team of Claire Bargabos, Paige Ackley, Leigha Gould, Elizabeth Decker rallied to win in a time of 9:56.11.

Utica’s Jade Dening opened the meet by winning the 3,000-meter steeplechase by 52 seconds in a time of 11:46.14. Her teammate Mackenzie Mix took the 400-meter dash in an impressive time of 56.76 seconds, which is one the fastest times in Division III to date this season.
 
St. John Fisher's Riley Corey annexed the 10,000-meter run for the second straight season by just over eight seconds in 39:07.43. Jenna Costello emerged victorious in the javelin throw, while Jordan Lehman fired the hammer 48.09 for a convincing win in that event.
 
Alfred University's Anne Spila won the javelin throw, firing it 30.39 meters.
