St. John Fisher College won its second consecutive Empire 8 Outdoor Track and Field Championship, holding off host and rival Nazareth College to win the 2022 team title from Golden Flyer Stadium on May 6-7. The Cardinals finished with 202 team points, 14 ahead of the host Golden Flyers. Utica University placed third with 135 points.
The Cardinals had five individuals/relay teams win events and had several student-athletes earn personal records over the two-day meet.
Utica first-year standout Mackenzie Mix was named the 2022 Empire 8 Women's Outdoor Championship Track Athlete of the Meet after sweeping the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dash events over the weekend. She took the 100-meter dash in 12.23 seconds, while winning the 200-meter dash in 26.08 seconds. Mix recorded an impressive time of 56.76 seconds on Friday evening in the 400-meter dash which nearly set a championship meet record.
Utica junior thrower Jane Fahy was named 2022 Empire 8 Outdoor Co-Field Athlete of the Meet after winning the shot put, while earning runner-up accolades in the discus. Fahy won the shot put with a toss of 12.99 meters and was second in the disxus with a throw of 36.19 meters.
Nazareth senior Brenna Johnson was named 2022 Empire 8 Outdoor Co-Field Athlete of the Meet after winning the long jump with an impressive leap of 5.73 meters, just shy of the championship mark, while finishing third in the high jump, clearing 1.55 meters. She also exceled in the track events, placing in the top four in five different events.
Utica freshman Jade Dening, Nazareth senior Elizabeth Decker and the St. John Fisher duo of Ciarra Franz and Samantha Shea won a pair of titles. Dening took the 3,000-meter steeplecase and 1.500-meters, while Decker won the 800-meter run and was a member of the winning 4 x 800-meter relay. ,Franz and Shea were both members of Fisher's 4 x 100-meter relay team, while Franz also rolled to a win in the 100-meter hurdles. Shea also was part of the Cardinals' 4 x 400-meter relay.
