Empire 8 Announces 2023 Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Award Winners and All-Conference Selections

The Empire 8 Conference announced its 2023 Women’s Outdoor Track & Field All-Conference awards on Monday, June 5. The awards are voted on by the league's head coaches.
 
St. John Fisher University graduate student Samantha Shea was named the 2023 Empire 8 Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year. Shea placed 13th in the preliminaries of the 400-meter dash at the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships from the Polisseni Track and Field Complex on her home campus in a career-best time of 56.40 seconds. She won the 200- (25.35 seconds) and 400-meter dash (56.99 seconds) at the 2023 E8 Outdoor Track and Field Championships and was part of the winning 4 x 100-meter relay team, crossing the finish line in 47.71 seconds. She is St. John Fisher’s second Empire 8 Indoor Track Athlete of the Year award winner, joining Riley Corey (2021).
 
Utica University senior Jane Fahy was named the 2023 Empire 8 Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year. Fahy earned All-American honors in the shot put at the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field hosted by St. John Fisher after finishing sixth with a program and Empire 8 record toss of 14.28 meters. She also won the shot put at both the 2023 E8 Outdoor (second straight title) and All-Atlantic Region Championships this spring. Fahy was also runner up in the discus throw at the E8 Championships. Fahy is the second Utica student-athlete to garner E8 Field Athlete of the Year honors, joining Kelsey Wands (2021).
 
Isabel Morse of Nazareth University was named the 2023 Empire 8 Outdoor Rookie of the Year. Morse. Morse won the pole vault, clearing 3.40 meters at the Empire 8 Championship and shattered Nazareth’s program record in the event by clearing 3.70 meters at the All-Atlantic Region Championship, which ranked her 27th in Division III. Morse is Nazareth’s second E8 Outdoor Track and Field Rookie of the Year, joining Brenna Johnson, who was named in 2019. 
 
Nazareth head coach James Goss and his staff was named the 2023 Empire 8 Coaching Staff of the Year. The Golden Flyers won their first Empire 8 Outdoor Track & Field Championship. Overall, Nazareth had 17 different student-athletes earn All-Conference honors and several All-Region honorees. It is Nazareth’s first E8 Outdoor Track Coaching Staff of the Year honor.
 
The Empire 8 first, second and third team all-conference selections were determined at the championship meet on May 5-6 from the Laura M. Casamento Track and Field Complex, hosted by Utica.
 
One member of each team was named that institution's representative on the 2023 Women's Outdoor Track & Field Sportswoman of the Year Team. The Empire 8 Conference emphasizes that "Competing with Honor and Integrity" is an essential component of a student-athlete's experience in conjunction with an institution's educational mission. These honorees have distinguished themselves and consistently exhibit the critical traits as outstanding sportswomen.
