Defending champion Nazareth University holds a slim lead after day one of the 2024 Empire 8 Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship from the Polisseni Track and Field Complex on the campus of St. John Fisher University on Friday, May 3. Nazareth has 87 points, five points ahead of host St. John Fisher University, who has 82 points after eight of the 22 scored events.
The Golden Flyers won three events on Friday. Emily Weaver began the meet by taking the 3,000-meter steeplechase, hitting the line together with teammate Ella Impaglia to win by one, one-hundredth of a second in a time of 11:49.32. Lea Richard annexed the hammer throw for the third consecutive season with a toss of 49.05 meters, while Rosie Morse won the pole vault, clearing 3.53 meters.
St. John Fisher's Veronica Duell won the E8 long jump championship with a leap of 5.68 meters, which is currently tied for 19th in Division III to date this season.
Mackenzie Mix of Utica took the 400-meter dash for the second time in three seasons in an impressive time of 57.60 seconds, which puts her near the top-50 in Division III to date this season.
Lauren DeMichele annexed the 10,000-meter run for the second straight season by 16 seconds over teammate Riley Jameson in a time of 38:57.59.
Elaina Furtado-Rahill of Utica won the javelin throw, firing it 33.66 meters.
Alfred's 4 x 800-meter relay team of Sarah Lutkins, Annabelle Townsend, McKenzie Hall, Olivia Gilbert rallied to win in a time of 9.48.86. Gilbert ran the anchor leg in a speedy time of 2:15.09 to make up a seven second difference.
Anne Spila of Alfred leads the heptathlon with 2,612 points with four of the seven events completed. She was the top finisher in the 100-meter hurdles, 200-meters and shot put.
